University of Florida News - New study measures hookah use among Florida teens

Rooted in Middle Eastern culture, hookah pipes burn charcoal and tobacco, also known as shisha. Air is drawn through the tobacco and into the pipe, where it passes through water....There are at least 100 hookah lounges in Florida and most have opened in the past few years, Barnett said. Hookah is typically shared in groups and smoked with sweetened, flavored tobacco.

I always assumed hookah = pot. Hookah lounges? Anybody seen one?

Not in this country - seemed like a cool place, and had great rugs, but I don't smoke so the main objective was lost on me.

Trendy in larger cities. Louisville has a popular one- Will wanted to check it out when we were there (because he really really wants to be a hippie:roll:) and we almost went in to gawk, but I decided a good mom probably doesn't take her 16 year old to a hookah lounge. It also served food, but the thought of food and sweetened tobacco smoke made me kinda ill.

We have one or two of those lounges in SoTamp. I have been in one of them very briefly and it was stinky.

It is definitely a trend. There are several places where you can get supplies for home use.

I think whacky weed is smoked in them in other countries. Maybe it will be whacky weed in those cities, which have decriminalized?

:dunno:

Hookahs and jewelry??? Strange, indeed~~~~~~

Kurt, the town of your alma mater has at least 2 hookah lounges that I have seen. They are on University, across 13th and toward downtown Gainesville.

It is a fad (and both Grayton Boys have apparently been to these places), but I bet it won't last. Right up there with oxygen bars....
