All I know about Sacred Heart is that it cost us over $900 just to get a blood test done after my wife had a miscarraige. The midwife needed to know her blood type. We keep receiving new bills. One doctor stuck his head in the door, asked if she needed anything, and then sent a bill for a couple hundred dollars. And I think they even charged us less since we don't have insurance for them to deal with. I think we'll probably get our name on one of the bricks for the new addition!

So how do you feel about these numbers? Think Sacred Heart is good or dangerous?

Dangerous.

I agree with the screwed up billing post. Their billing is a nightmare. Don't even bother calling them, It never gets fixed.

The data provided is worthless if you know nothing about the demographic of the patients in question. Without knowing the baseline health status of the patients, you could argue either the hospital is doing a good job or a lousy job.

Michigan but someday in SoWal as well
Strange. I actually was wondering last night (before seeing this thread) which is the best hospital near SoWal -- Panama City or Destin? What do you think and why? Also, best dentist and best doctors/clinics to go to on or near 30A.

If it's an option at all, either Baptist in Pensacola or Sacred Heart-Pensacola. As for Bay v. Sacred Heart Emerald Coast, I'd go with Bay because they're higher volume, and higher volume hospitals generally do better at a lot of operations and procedures than lower volume hospitals.

We use Rill Banks in Santa Rosa Beach as a dentist, and have been pretty happy with him.

I've had a lot of experience with Sacred Heart here in SanDestin, and can't say enough good things about them. Both of my parents passed away in the last two years and were treated there, and I had some minor surgery done there. We also have had great experiences with their doctor's group.

The billing/care issues I've had was with non-group doctors who, as you say, "stuck their head in the door". That's isn't SH's fault, the "specialists" pop up like weeds.

After dealing with major health care issues for the last couple of years of my parent's lives, I have learned to ask questions, ask them again, and then ask them till you get them answered. I ask every doctor's office right up front to figure out how much everything is going to cost. The office manager in my surgeon's office was wonderful about it. Obviously, in an emergency, that's not possible.

For emergency care, though, my money is still on SH. I've been to that emergency room, for everything from an animal bite to massive stroke, and the people there are caring and professional and the facility is top-notch.

I agree with the good words. My experience, fortunately, has not been as extensive as yours; however, it has been wonderful.

And, I have never had to wait--even in the ER; never had a billing problem; never had what I considered to be an excessive charge.

I have a primary care doctor who has staff privileges and she is able to refer me to any specialist that I need. So far, I have seen 4, and all have been terrific!
