How do you feel about political protests on 30A?

I am disappointed to see a group with a full set up (large signs, a walk up booth) right on 30A in downtown Rosemary Beach, Florida staging a "Impeach Obama" political protest.

Yes- I am for freedom of speech. But I believe that our beautiful area is above such a polarizing display that accomplishes nothing and I was under the impression that since RB is private property that they''d be able to spare the rest of us from the visual clutter.

For the record I would have felt the same if someone was out there feeling justified 8 years ago with Impeach Bush signs.

As I see it, half of the country hates Obama, half voted for him because they like him (or their perception is that there wasn't a better option). But regardless of where you stand- do we really want to leave the door open to fanatics on both sides to muck up the view in paradise (like a gawdy high rise or a franchise restaurant).

He signed an executive order allowing golf carts on 30-A. He has got to go!

Freedom of speech is either applicable for all or it isn't. I and many others, spent many years defending the right to utilize it in any manner, except as used in yelling fire in a crowded theater. If they want to publicly call for anything not illegal or immoral, then they have the right.

I just hope that Rosemary, a private community, will allow other political protest maybe representing an opposing opinion.

I talked to a woman in the Rosemary Beach office who said they are on a public area and did not need a permit.

So you need a permit to panhandle, but not to stage a protest and set up a booth?

I would have thought that because it is public property (supposedly) that this would be why one *would* need a permit.

Furthermore, I would have thought that there would be safety related laws that prohibit such activity from the right of way so close to the main thoroughfare.

I am not motivated politically. I don't want to see this for any position for any issue. Me really thinks this opens Pandora's box if the county and RB says it's acceptable....

I think it would be fun to go and talk with them and capture it on video a la Daily Show style. Ask them a few questions under the guise that you agree with them but beneath the surface your conversation amounts to pure mockery, particularly when selectively edited. Then of course you upload the whole thing to youtube. no apart from the thoughtless stupidity, it doesn't bother me in the least.
