Hmmmmm, on more than one occasion we have had potential renters say that in the past other owners did not charge them tax. They acted very suprised when we told them about the 11%. Very interesting.

I can totally believe that.

Also be aware that there are guests who will go down the list until they find someone who doesn't charge the tax.

Amen, when I worked in rentals I actually had a woman tell me she had never paid taxes and that I would have to waive them for her to rent. I politely explained that she should keep looking.

In defense of some, some people are truly ignorant of the fact that they must pay taxes. They've gotten bad information or assumed something that isn't true. I used to see it all the time.

I always tell people the rate. Then I tell them that we pay the cleaning fees for them but then they have to pay the 11% tax. And I usually add in a line that the tax is something everyone pays, not just people who rent from me. I don't want anyone to go around thinking they'll get a better bargain elsewhere on that score. ;-)

SWGB, I'd love to see the faces of people who don't "know" they have to pay tax on their rental if ever they visited NYC or Chicago. You want to talk about sticker shock...oh my my.
