We will be on hwy 49S. Someone said you go North on I-10 then take a couple of exits, cross a bridge and bypass the tunnel. They did not remember the exits names or #'s.
Thanks

Don't know where you are going but a friend of mine goes to Destin for vacation. They go across that Bay Bridge that bypasses the tunnel. They get on 165 S at Exit 2 which is at the Bay Bridge Rd. But they come in Hwy 45 S. and turn left on Exit 9 to get onto 165 S. first. They go south on Alternate 90 which meets up with I-10 just the other side of the tunnel by the battleship. From the looks of the Alabama map, you can go 98 to Mobile and head back north onto 165 and take that right onto the Bay Bridge Rd. Good luck.

Thanks. The last few years the traffic at the tunnel has been awful. We are leaving at 4am and should get there somewhere after lunch and if we can avoid the tunnel it would be great!

The first year we came down we made the mistake of getting in that tunnel traffic July 4th weekend. Boy what a mess. We found a better route after that and took Hwy 231 the second time and have taken Hwy 331 since then. I hope you have no trouble picking up 165. It might look like it is out of the way but I know two families that have gone that way and it really does not take any longer skirting around it.

If you are coming from the north, the HWY 98 route from near Hattiesburg is your best bet. The tunnel is only bad on 'big weekend' Fridays, and there might be transient congestion at rush hour;I can't remember the last time I had any delay in the tunnel, and I have gone through it at least 20 or so times within the last year.
