It's just an opinion.

One has to ask, though, why he would even would have considered such a proposal. It's like he had no feel for what kind of ramifications it would have...

I agree it was odd ... maybe I'll be proven wrong in the end but I almost wish he would step back and process everything for a little bit before diving back in.

Well I don't think that's quite a fair assessment. Clinton had a somewhat difficult relationship with the military as a whole but I have a different sense overall from Obama, despite this obvious gaffe.

Michelle Obama is all over the news talking about the importance of ongoing support for military familes. Since this "policy" idea seems so opposite from that philosophy, I wonder if it was just a bean-counter thing. Maybe it was even a true lack of understanding of what it is like to be military. But, in my mind even if that is the case, at least it is not outright hostility or even ambivalence. At least I certainly don't think so. I would not jump to conclusions yet.

I'm not calling it hostility or ambivalence, but I am not impressed with Michelle's husband's support of the military or their families. (I have noted her support, and am grateful that she has taken her stance.)

Last week we had a POW speak at Character Education, and yesterday one of our faculty who served in Iraq spoke about the Congressional Medal of Honor. As I read this thread, I keep thinking of the words they use with the families: "From a grateful nation." I hope our Commander in Chief continues to represent the nation and extend its gratitude appropriately.
