So I am out with a relative today and we go over to his house and he is showing me his cows and horses and goats. So I tell my relative that I am thinking about buying some goats and have them butchered, and he looks at me and says, "hey I got four goats for sell and I'll give you a great deal on them.

So I get to thinking, which by now anyone on this board knows is dangerous and I ask, "how much for the goats?" and he says, "give me a hundred bucks." I say you got it, and pull out my wallet and give him a hundred bucks. So by now I am starting to think about how great these goats are going to taste and I get out of my vehicle and go over and ask can I look at them and he says sure.

So I go into the field and walk over to the goats and they come over and start nuzzling on me and his daughter comes out and says to me, " they're my pet." I thinking oh crap I can't eat lassie with horns so I look at my relative and ask what does it cost to feed these things and he says 7 dollars a week.

I pull out my wallet again and hand him another hundred bucks and say to him call me when that runs out. I am now the proud owner of 4 pet goats that I will never eat.

:lolabove:This is the funniest story I've heard in a long time....is this really true? And, if so, I wonder how many times he's sold those goats and then the daughter comes out and gives her one liner, "they're my pet."

I hadn't thought of that... diabolical.

Your timing is perfect! There's a terrific thread on another board right now dealing with someone else who decided to buy some local goats - it will answer many of the questions posters have asked here, and it's a pretty cool story, too.

Ooooh boy.... I am the original carnivore, but I admit I've never really thought much about where the meat comes from.

And somehow goats are different for me than rabbits or fish or deer or chickens. Or even lambs or cows... it's wierd but I guess I've just never thought about goats that way. I've got some thinkin' to do...

Watch Fast Food Nation and get back to us.

:scratch:I don't think I WANT to watch that movie. I've heard about it. Kurt, you're challenging me WAY too much!!

And there's a BOOK???

The book came first - and it is nothing like the movie, which was fictionalized and just tried to cover too much, so it covered nothing very well. The book is well researched and explains the "why behind the what" of fast food - where it came from, what sustains it, where is it going, and the harm it causes on so many levels.

This was required reading at my son's high school last year. He momentarily became a vegetarian.
