As for the Daily Show audience, don't you think he is smart enough to stack the audience when negotiating terms with the producers of the show? Of course they would cheer him on. He may look like Gomer Pyle, but he's no dummy.
Read the New Yorker article - he complains that during the 2008 campaign, all the media interviews wanted to talk about was the fact that he was a pastor, and that he had also been governor for ten years and had more experience than anyone else running but that no one ever asked him about what he had achieved as governor.
