I had an up close and personal encounter with a big alligator....on the lake behind the Pinkstons, in Grayton. (I'm not sure about west lake, east lake and all the official names of these places are, I just know where they physically are) I was crabbing, leaning down over the side of the pier, on my knees....and I had a tug on my string, so I start to pul it up slowly, got my net ready to scoop up my crab, much to my surprise, me and Mr Gator was almost nose to nose. Honestly I think I scared him as much as he scared me. I was about 10 then, and I went right back to crabbing.....now I would probably pass out!

I'm a Pinkston. Let's see, you were 10...that must of been 1973. That was probably my Grandaddy's gator, Jack Daniels. He used to feed him marshmallows every evening. Very dangerous to do that! There has been a lot of crabbing off that dock!

Well...it's a toss up since no one at Grayton has been attacked by either (that I know of). Guess you'd have to check the stats for Florida. Let's see who can find the answer the fastest...go Kurt.

Here is one article from 2004. It says that at that time only 14 people had been killed by alligators since 1971.

There are a couple of gators that hang out behind my house...

Rule of thumb: Is (insert wildlife species here) found in SoWal? Does it bite?Yes, and yes. But the second yes is usually only if you pester it, or it's really, really hungry.

I bet more people die from eating bad oysters.

135 people every year die of coconuts falling on their heads.

just keep telling yourself "it's safer than coconuts."

Personally, I am much more afraid of the squirrels, which like to throw the rock hard green pinecones from the tree tops, than any alligator that may be hanging out in our lakes. My odds of dying would be much greater given the fact that if the squirrels conked me on the head with a pine cone and knocked me out, the many fireants would be all over me like white on rice. Someone would have to go underground to find my many little bitty pieces.

Sounds like fuel for a Steven King book/film... :rotfl:

"I like coconuts, break them open, they smell like ladies, lying in the sun."
