As our lives have grown more complex, I find that the lines in this site have grown murkier...I don't know whether this post goes here or elsewhere....But, based on my prior exxperiences here, I am sure someone will kick my butt, if I am posting in the wrong forum. I have become convinced that given the fact we are a rudderless nation until our next president is sworn in, we should discontinue the neurotic ruminations about the economy. Nothing is to be gained and the market will just continue spasming. Some of you know I am saying this from my position as a 61 YO retiree who has her and her family's lifetime savings in the market. I paid into my IRA's and retirement accounts for 40 of my working years. So, hey if I can do it you can do it. We will move through this with alot more speed if we just take a deep breath and go fishing or knitting. My anology would be, forgive me guys, childbirth. The tenser and more frightened you are, the more it hurts and the longer the labor. I hope all will do something like meet at the beach and toast your good fortune for living where you do. You young pups...quit fretting...Continue to work hard, live frugally, save as much as you can and avoid the tempation to take your angst out on others with mean, snarky remarks...We are all in this together and we will get through it together. But, we must control our emotional responses. Like my Mom taught me, be grateful for good luck but never take it for granted. We are a stronger, tougher people than this...quit whining and live your lives

Well said, jensieblue. You and shelly are of the same mind, it seems. He/she's heading north to enjoy the fall foliage. Maybe your thread could evolve to free/cheap ideas for stress reduction. Lord knows I do feel better when I turn off the news. It's like that old joke - Why do you keep hitting yourself in the head with a hammer?

Answer: Because it feels so good when I stop.

last night my wife and i listened to a financial advisor tell us that now was a great time to jump into the market. We have never been in the market, and consequently, we feel we have spared all the pain others are feeling.....perhaps if folks would have accepted more conservative investment yields, there would less hand wringing now. i can't tell you how many folks laughed at our lack of investment strategy. Living frugally and saving all you can surely has nothing to do with investing in the stock market.

A financial adviser advised me to get into the stock market about 3 years ago using funds I gained from a real estate investment, saying it was the best bet! I informed him that real estate did very well for me and I didn't trust the stock market. I invested in real estate, away from the beach (this was during 2005 hurricane season) and I am getting a return with rental income and....gasp...I paid cash for the properties. The adviser thought I was nuts!

I didn't over leverage (or leverage at all) and I am in a good position to sit tight and wait out the storm.

I may be living in a 108 year old house with one bathroom with a husband and 2 kids...is that frugal, or what?

My sentiments exactly, Jensie. I am heading to Sowal, going to sit on the beach and laugh with friends made via Sowal, and one day when we are older, we will have lots to reminisce about. Remember when the DOW hit XYZ, when our home values dropped (and now we are sitting on a goldmine ---granted we are 80 when we say this ) but, no amount of money can buy that.

Trying

O.K. I think that the advice about appreciating our good fortune, etc.. is correct. Any day now, I will emerge from under my desk, discarding all of the empty liquor bottles, and I will be ready to rebuild from whatever is left when capitulation finally occurs.

I did get a small kick out of the book "Dow 40,000" The good news is that if the world survives another 150 years, the author will have gotten it right. I think he was predicting it in just a few years, before the internet bubble burst.

Please excuse any typos, or spelling errors. Being drunk before 10:30 a.m. makes this tough.

Good advice. Thanks. I am spending the afternoon with my 5 year old granddaughter and her 16 month old brother...we will walk through the forest and play on the beach. As the commercial says: Priceless!

Life is good.:D
