I am not as concerned about a backpacker, as I am about securing our ports. Our port security is seriously lacking. They are a time bomb waiting to happen.

True dat. I often think about the potential that exists for catastrophe as I watch freighters flying every flag imaginable, stacked to the rafters with cargo boxes cruising up the Mississippi day and night.

Without reading this whole thing, is everyone taking the talk radio side of this? The winners are the ovarian lottery are the only ones who deserve to live in a shining city on a hill, and those damn Mexicans, Irishmen, and Italians can fend for themselves?

Please read the whole thing! And the "world is flat" thread....

Skunkape posted what he thought were good questions in response to my request for info/opinions on the issue.

Your last sentence doesn't even make sense.

Why would I read the world is flat thread? As for the last sentence, the assimilation/crime/language thread was made with the Italians and the Irish, now it's made with the Mexicans. The fence and security issue is a racist non-starter as long as the Canadian border is wide open. The port topic really has nothing to do with this, so I'm not sure why that's been brought up.

During the 1990s, an average of more than 1.3 million immigrants ? legal and illegal ? settled in the United States each year. Between January 2000 and March 2002, 3.3 million additional immigrants have arrived. In less than 50 years, the U.S. Census Bureau projects that immigration will cause the population of the United States to increase from its present 288 million to more than 400 million.
The foreign-born population of the United States is currently 33.1 million, equal to 11.5 percent of the U.S. population. Of this total, the Census Bureau estimates 8-9 million are illegal immigrants. Other estimates indicate a considerably higher number of illegal immigrants.
Approximately 1 million people receive permanent residency annually. In addition, the Census Bureau estimates a net increase of 500,000 illegal immigrants annually.
The present level of immigration is significantly higher than the average historical level of immigration. This flow may be attributed, in part, to the extraordinary broadening of U.S. immigration policy in 1965. Since 1970, more than 30 million legal and illegal immigrants have settled in the U.S., representing more than one-third of all people ever to come to America's shores.
At the peak of the Great Wave of immigration in 1910, the number of immigrants living in the U.S. was less than half of what it is today, though the percentage of the population was slightly higher. The annual arrival of 1.5 million legal and illegal immigrants, coupled with 750,000 annual births to immigrant women, is the determinate factor? or three-fourths? of all U.S. population growth.

The [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pew_Hispanic_Center"]Pew Hispanic Center[/ame] state that 57% of illegal aliens are of [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexican"]Mexican[/ame] origin and about 24% are of non-Mexican Latin American origin. They also report that while the number of legal immigrants (including LPRs, refugees, and asylees) arriving has not varied substantially since the 1980s, the number of illegal aliens has increased dramatically and, since the mid 1990s, has surpassed the number of legal immigrants.

Well, that begs the question (sic), are we in better shape, economically, than the 70s? What about socially, and other qualities of life? There is obviously a demand for labor, so as long as that exists, and as long as men and women in the US can create jobs, the tired, poor and huddled masses will continue to yearn to breathe free.

why are we trying to re-invent the wheel, everyone needs a passport and needs to be accounted for. It's not rocket science. Of course, before that can happen the current situation needs to be remedied...ie. 10's of millions of illegals.

You wouldn't think it would be so hard since you supposedly need an ID to buy alcohol, write a check, use a credit card, drive a car, fly, enter a government building, vote, get a job, get medical care, go to school.......I always had to have ID because I would leave the country - State ID card to go to Canada before I was old enough to drive, passport to travel abroad, visa to live for extended period in other countries.

I'm not familiar enough w/ the black market/living off the grid to know why it's so hard to enforce.

FTLOG, what the hail are you talking about? :dunno:

Maybe if your American Idol Bush had a better plan and policies instead of looking for WMD, we would have more money for security at our ports.

In February 2006 the president of the American Association of Port Authorities complained that the $708 million allotted for maritime security over the past four years amounted to only one-fifth of what the port authorities had identified as needed to properly secure the ports.

I haven't a clue what point you're trying to make, but we didn't go into a whole discussion of ports vs. a fence to keep illegal immigrants out.
All I did was a make comment to skunky that i was less concerned with a terrorist crossing with backpack full of small bombs vs. a lareg scale weapon coming in our port.
