Interesting that he gets preachy and fired-up for a crowd that will support him no matter what. There is a fine line between appealing to a voter and pandering. I also remember John Kerry's disaster of ambling up to a rural sporting goods shop early in his presidential campaign, trying to shed the image of a Bay State liberal, and proclaiming "I need me a huntin' license". Yikes.
Maybe it was a broader message intended for a wider audience. Maybe he just wanted to do it on friendly turf. Like I said, I just happened to overhear it on TV as I was cleaning up the house. I didn't take his words literally at the time and didn't know who he was adressing. I saw it as a kind of strong hail Mary (desperation) campaign speech not directed at anyone in particular. Now that I know the real story, that first impression isn't just going to go away. I think it was purely a style speech intended to turn things around. I think he's hoping his words will resonate with those who voted for him in 2008. If it works than it was a good move, regardless of whether it was disingenous, insincere, phony or whatever. At this point, I don't see how it could make things worse. It's just good to see him lose the Miss Manners personna. Now ThAT was phony.
