God it smells awful, especially when hot - like melting plastic. Maybe at some point the off-gassing stops being so bad? But meanwhile you are breathing pollution. My guess is toxic fumes.

In my opinion, composite gets hotter in the sun than wood. Try walking barefoot on the Grayton boardwalk this summer. Ouch! Composite is more expensive from a materials and installation POV, but I think it's a good material for things like boardwalks and anything close to or on the ground. Bugs don't like it, it doesn't rot, and it seems pretty durable. I also think it isn't as slippery as wood when it gets wet. I used it for the floor in my outdoor shower and really like it there.

Yes, it is hotter to the feet than wood. It does cost a lot more than wood. It lasts virtually forever. It’s good for a lot of things, but I built my main deck with #1pressure treated about 16 years ago and I put oil based stain on it every couple years and it looks and feels great. The size of the deck can certainly be a factor in your decision.

Ipe or cumaru are absolutely great. And it's really fa,r far better to install it with hidden fasteners (same with Trex). Again, if you have a relatively small deck, it would be a good choice. But if you have a biggy, you might need a second mortgage.

Right now if I build something from plain old pressure treated pine, and never do anything other than pressure wash it, it will look the way I want, hold up structurally, and probably outlive me. I may have to replace a board, or a screw here and there (really cheap). The wood may start to separate (split) a bit. It won't rot and succumb to termite damage. Did I say I like the look?

I have a small deck but I compensate with a big nail gun.
