I use efax too and like it a lot. However, I still have landline because of storms mostly, but also because of 911 emergencies. I was told by a reliable source that a landline is better for that...anyone else have info on that?
My cell phone has gps and carrier says it will work for 911....

all cell phones are 911 ready. Even if your service is disconnected, 911 will still work if the phone works. That is why the Sheriff's Offices around the Country collect old cell phones -- to give out to elderly, victims of domestic abuse, etc.

If you dial 911 from a land line phone, your exact address is shown. If you dial from a cell phone, cell towers triangulate your position, which is to say it is not exact. If you have a cell phone with true GPS (sorry iPhone), your exact location can be determined. The carriers with more advanced networks like CDMA - Verizon, Sprint - may have an advantage.

thanks guys that's what I thought too. Could there be a problem with our local 911 serive being able to deal with cell phones?

I am just curious why someone who should know what he is talking about re: the local 911 is the one who suggested I needed to keep the land line...I will ask him to elaborate now that I am thinking about it again.

As soon as I convert DSL in Atlanta to something else, will ditch the New AT&T completely. Have ditched Embarq completely at the beach. My cell is true GPS - and, I totally digg it! I prefer Sprint because they own their fiber instead of leasing from the New AT&T...... :D

The thing with 911 and cell phones is as TraderX stated if you call 911 from your land line they have your exact home address. Not necessarily so with calling on a cell phone. If you were in an emergency situation where you were unable to do more than get the number connected (say you passed out after dailing) the land line would valuable for the authorities to send someone to an exact address.
