When I saw cupcake boutiques sprouting up in our area I wondered if they were a trend and how they could last. Just yesterday I noticed one that had opened less than a year ago had closed, although 2 other of their locations remain open. At $5 a cupcake, who knows.

First off, :welcome: back, JUL.

Yep. Paying up to $5 a cupcake is ridonkulous. Especially the stale ones that used to be sold in the 32459 zip code.

i wondered the same thing when they all started popping up. i can't say i'd pay 5 bucks for a cupcake. i think 2.75 is my limit. but, i'd pay 5 bucks for anything fried.

We split them because they are so large, so I guess that makes it $2.50 a person.
We have GiGi's here and they are usually fresh but so large I can't hardly make it past the icing to get to the cake.

Have you tired Sweet Jeni's in Seacrest? Huge, gooey, delicious- enough for 2. She does have fall hours now but she is open for sure on the weekends. She won the cupcake birthday challenge on another thread.

I guess it's all relative. I often wondered why people would go out to buy icecream for a family of five, for $5 a person, when they can buy a quart to serve everyone for $5. All the ice-cream shops seem to have a line 20 people deep throughout the summer so I guess people really don't shop with logic and reason when they are on vacation. Once you start salivating, $5 is a cheap fix.

I guess you could also compare it to the coffee craze where people pay $5 for a 30 cent cup of coffee. Or, the bar craze, where people pay $8 for a dollar's worth of vodka.

We've had some Bundt cake shops opening up around our area this last year, it's a chain called Nothing Bundt Cakes-they have mini cupcake sized ones, mini bunts and regular sized-different flavors but all with cream cheese frosting-quite tasty! The mini bundt is probably 5 inches across and readily serves 2 but 4 if you just want a small sweet and I think they're $4. The perk is that they have tasters out all of the time so you get a once in square bite for free!!

So true, and as a family of five, getting ice cream out is quite the event. But, we do save it for our vacation and fourth of July. And I must say, it's more about the bike ride up, and the walk around Seaside after. The ice cream is the excuse for the whole experience!

I never got the whole cupcake thing.

But a gelato cone is a whole different story! (Though I certainly wouldn't mind it if was cheaper.)
