The summer travel season is upon us and the beaches will soon be covered with families from around the world. The heat and humidity is up but the water is beautiful, inviting and refreshing. Mama Sea Turtles are also visiting our beaches this time of year for a very special reason...to lay their eggs

SEA TURTLES:
Walton County is lucky to be a nesting spot for Sea Turtles. Every year nesting season runs from May through October. You are likely to see signs or hear someone say “Keep our beaches clean, dark and flat”. Please heed the warnings. Sea Turtles find their way by the light of the moon. Porch lights and flashlights can confuse them and cause the turtles to waste precious energy wandering away from the beach. (When the hatchlings emerge, we want them to go to the water, not towards the condos). Holes and sand castles are fun to build but they make obstacles for the turtles. Sea Turtles often get trapped in the holes we dig at the beach. Have your fun in the sand, just be sure to level it back out when you leave for the day. Please, take everything you bring with you when you leave. Trash, beach toys and the other “stuff” create obstacles and hazards for turtles and humans. Some of these items can even be deadly to Sea Turtles and other wildlife. Walton County hosts a variety of wildlife including several species that are endangered. Please be good stewards and allow the wildlife to be wild. Never approach, feed, or harass any of the critters you find in our area. If you see a turtle or other fascinating creature, please keep your distance and take nothing but pictures. If you see an animal in trouble, contact South Walton Turtle Watch, the Sherriff's office, tell the lifeguard or grab a local who knows who to call for assistance. No one is legally permitted to touch a Sea Turtle without proper training and certification.

For more information about our visiting Sea Turtles check out the South Walton Turtle Watch.
