heh
I rented Hard Candy some time ago. I remember talking to my brother about it, he did not like it quite as much as I did. I could imagine him wincing over the phone.
Funny how it seems to bother <men> more than the ladies. ;-)
I liked Juno quite a bit, it was head and shoulders above the usual Hollywood dreck.
But I did have my reservations about it.
Juno reminded me a lot of another farcical, precious, indie comedy, Ghost World.
I am all for quirky, individualistic characters; my all-time favorite movie, Local Hero, is the granddaddy of quirky character studies.
But sometimes this jokey ironic self-awareness stuff can be wearying.
In the first act, the clinic scene let me know that the film was *not* exactly going to be a realistic study of teen pregnancy. And it went on from there.
Seeing Juno ensconced in an easy chair delivering her lines, pipe in hand, was a bit much.
However, Juno displayed something that Ghost World was short on: vulnerability and guts.
When she gets into the car after that last visit at the yuppie house, bursts into tears, shakes it off, and drives away, the movie made a huge statement, and this was accomplished without a single snarky line.
I thought the locker confrontation with Cera was good, too: "I'm a planet!"
Finally, as much as I love old movies like Ferris Bueller, it was gratifying to see a film where the parents are not complete idiots.
I'll probably buy the DVD just so I can pore over the production design. The film sets were almost distracting. The soundtrack is really good, too. My sons were surprised to hear that a couple of the songs are from "my" time.
