I found one once and raised it. Had him for two years. He was the coolest pet I ever had. Don't know how young yours is, but the vet I took mine to said to feed him whole wheat bread soaked with milk. Worked like a charm.

We kept him in a cardboard box and cut up some rags to swaddle him...put a little reptile warmer at the corner to keep him warm, and Mrs. Hop took him to the wildlife refuge in destin this morning. We debated keeping the little bugger...but figured he'd be best in professional hands! Alls well that ends well!:wave:Bye squirrly!

I found a baby squirrel that had no hair, very little. We kept him/her for 3 weeks and then called wild life rescue in Destin. They took her and found out it was a rare black squirrel. They put her with another squirrel and let them acclimate themselves back into the wild in FWB near the Air Force range. Loved the little thing and sad to see it go, but it needed to be in the wild.

We almost had a new pet yesterday.....but thankfully the story has a happy ending for all!

I went outside on the back porch yesterday afternoon, and noticed a little creature splayed out Superman-style on a chair. When I got closer, I realized it was a baby squirrel, looked up in the rafters, and sure enough, probably the dumbest squirrel in the history of the universe had built a nest in the highest point of the rafters. This squirrel is uber-dumb because we have 2 50 pound terrier mixes who go bonkers if they hear any word starting in SQ....and we also have a cat.

The baby wasn't moving much so I picked him up and put him in a small box with a towel. After a few minutes, he started trying to walk around the box (not well- looks like walking was a very new thing). According to the squirrel rescue info, he was about 5 weeks old- eyes just open, tail not bushy yet. Kate and I gave him some water with a dropper, which he seemed to drink, snuggled a sock around him, and he went to sleep.

Next thing I know, Kate is googling "baby pet squirrel". What? Where did the "pet" part sneak into the equation? I called the Destin Wildlife group, and made plans to take him there this morning if his mom didn't fetch him.

We went out to dinner and left him on the porch in the box. Thankfully, his mother came back for him, and left me a nice "present" in the box as evidence that she was there (or payment for my trouble). We are so relieved!

Bdarg had stopped at the feed store in Niceville and picked up feeding syringes and Ebsilac (formula- baby squirrels are not supposed to have milk), so if anyone ends up with a baby squirrel, let me know and we have the supplies to take care of it if mom doesn't come back and you can't get him to the rehabilitator people right away. And there are lots of good websites with good info on evaluating the babies and caring for them- but the most important piece of info was to find the wildlife people and take the baby to them!

Years ago I found a baby squirrel, but it was a little older. It had fallen out of the nest and smacked his face. Took him to the vet to get checked out. I wound up raising him and had him for close to two years before I fully reintroduced him to the tree in the backyard. He was by far the coolest pet I've ever had.
