In an effort to conserve gas locations throughout Walton County are
accepting collections and will disseminate to evacuees in need. Here are
few:
1) Seaside
Seaside Katrina Relief Center is located in the kiosk directly across
from Shades on the circle. All donations are going directly to the
DeFuniak Red Cross, who is deeply grateful and we have expanded this
location's aid to include the efforts being managed by the Walton County
Chamber of Commerce. They are asking for the following:
Non-perishable food
Toiletries (toothpaste/toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant,
toilet paper, wet wipes)
Children's items (diapers, toys, formula, etc.)
Money
Clothes
Blankets, sheets, towels, new pillows
Phone card and gift cards
This location can also use some volunteers to help us staff the relief
station over the weekend. Please contact my office (231-3209) if you
feel that you can lend a hand. You just need to receive donations and
ferry them to the Chamber of Commerce and to DeFuniak.
2) The Walton County Chamber of Commerce will enact the Chamber Cares
program for the victims of Hurricane Katrina for the month of September.
Both Chamber offices will serve as drop off locations for donations that
will be passed along weekly to the American Red Cross. This location
will close Friday at 5 p.m. and reopen Tuesday at 8 a.m. Donations can
consist of:
Non-perishable food
Toiletries (toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, deodorant, toilet paper,
wet wipes, etc...)
Children's items such as diapers and toys
Monetary donations
Clothes
Blankets
Sheets
Towels
These are just a few of the items that the people from New Orleans,
Gulfport and Mobile will need as many of them only have the clothes on
their back and do not have houses to go back to.
We will also serve as a resource center for any information that your
business has on the hurricane relief, such as discounted hotel rooms,
job openings, etc... for when people call our offices.
We have already taken our Official Business Directory and Community
Information Guide along with our Vacation/Relocation packets to Butler
Elementary School and Sandestin. We have this information for any
business that would like to have these on hand to give to the evacuees.
For more information, please call the Chamber office at 267-0683 or
892-3191.
