The Walton County Chamber of Commerce will enact the Chamber Cares program for the victims of Hurricane Katrina for the month of September. Both Chamber offices will serve as drop off locations for donations that will be passed along weekly to the American Red Cross. Donations can consist of:

  • Non-perishable food
  • Toiletries (toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, deodorant, toilet paper, wet wipes, etc?)
  • Children?s items such as diapers and toys
  • Monetary donations
  • Clothes
  • Blankets
  • Sheets
  • Towels

These are just a few of the items that the people from New Orleans, Gulfport and Mobile will need as many of them only have the clothes on their back and do not have houses to go back to.

We will also serve as a resource center for any information that your business has on the hurricane relief, such as discounted hotel rooms, job openings, etc? for when people call our offices.

We have already taken our Official Business Directory and Community Information Guide along with our Vacation/Relocation packets to Butler Elementary School and Sandestin. We have this information for any business that would like to have these on hand to give to the evacuees.

For more information, please call the Chamber office at 267-0683 or 892-3191.

Kurt - any chance if you know if Red Cross considers you trained if you have trained in another part of the country? Will be down next week and want to help out if we can. Would we need to train down there or can we do it in KS before we come down?

Walton County Tax Collector Rhonda Skipper announced today that her office has partnered with SunTrust Bank to establish a Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund account, to allow donations to be accepted at all Walton County Tax Collector branches.

Skipper stated, "Our employees expressed a strong desire to assist those who have been impacted by the devastation of this disaster". "It has been made very apparent by those coordinating the relief effort that monetary donations are the most effective way to deliver services to those in desperate need", Skipper added. "In discussing what we could do to help, our staff focused on what we do every day, the collection and distribution of funds", Skipper said.

Anyone wishing to make donations by cash, check or money order may visit the Tax Collector's main office at 49 North 6th Street in DeFuniak Springs or at the South Walton annex office at 31 Coastal Centre Boulevard in Santa Rosa Beach.

All donations will be deposited into a designated account for Hurricane Katrina Relief, and be directed to the American Red Cross. Checks should be made payable to the American Red Cross.

In addition, a collection box will be available in the tax collector's office lobby to those wishing to donate hygiene items, baby supplies and toiletries for use at the local host shelter.

"It is only by the grace of God that it is not Walton County who is suffering this tragedy, and I am hopeful that the many citizens who enter our offices each day will choose to contribute to this charitable effort" Skipper concluded.

I think it is great they are doing this, but even if it is for the Red Cross, the last place I want to give money is the Tax Office.
