Anyone ever been? Going there in August and would like some info on the best things to do on those islands. And yes, I know the beaches of 30A are just as good. Thanks!

Maui is my favorite Island. The Road to Hana is a must; takes forever, but the views and the opportunity for photography are fantastic. The Crater at Sunrise...surfing, swimming with dolphins. Hike to Lindberg's gravesite.

Eating at Mama's Fish House...watching the wind surfers. Visiting a tropical flower farm. Art shows under the Banyan Tree in Lahina...the whaling museum.

The list is endless. What do you especially like to do?

Have 5 days in Kauai and 4 in Maui. Def want to go fishing one day, golf one day, beach, snorkel, helicopter tour. Figure we will take a few days to melt on the beach and be active the rest of the time.

We stayed in Wailea when we were in Maui. I liked staying in that area as opposed to Kapalua which gets more rain. My favorite part of the trip was the helicopter ride. What I saw was so beautiful that I cried. We also liked snorkeling. You can rent snorkeling equipment, but I would advise you to take at least your own snorkel so you don't have to put something in your mouth that has been in someone else's. We drove around the island to get a feel for the different geography on the island. I also enjoyed watching the surfers.

We spent most of our time just relaxing at the beach and the pool, getting cooled off by being sprayed with Evian water by the pool attendants. It was very luxurious (Four Seasons). Sally Field had the cabana next to ours. It was kind of exciting to be that close to a famous actress. No one bothered her, and I'm sure she appreciated that.

No remarkable food. We did a luau (gotta do that once, I guess). It was interesting but didn't float my boat. I liked the Lahaina Grill (just like the funkiness of that area), but it gets mixed reviews.

Speak to the locals or find a map written by locals of off places. We found the most incredible waterfall on the road to Hana in Maui. If you can go to the top of Haleakala to watch sunrise, do it!! It is an incredible experience. Then ride a bike down. We stayed in the Kaanapali area. If you continue past all the hotels, heading North, I think, you will see some black sand beaches, some awesome cliffs where rocks are balanced carefully on top of one another. I believe they are burial sites placed carefully along the edge of the cliffs. The views are spectacular. Of course, there is also great snorkeling at the Molokini Crater. We did that twice. Never have been to Kauai, but hear it is more laid back and restful. Enjoy!! (BTW- do not take any black sand home with you. It's bad luck and the P.O. receives tons of it back every year )

So much to do and see. Have been to both and they are so beautiful. Go exploring in Kauai, like in the area toward princeville and haneli bay (sp). Fern Grotto is beautiful.

A must in Maui on top of the normal sight seeing things is to eat at what used to be Cheeseburger in paradise (lawsuit made them change name and I don't know what it changed too) in Lahaina. What you need to try is the macadamia nut pancakes..yum..
On the road to Hana you need to have a guide book and be sure to stop at the red beach, and black beach, and hike thru the bamboo forests....

Thanks for the memories this thread brought up!

Wow - so many great memories. I second and third the sunrise at Haleakala - road to Hana (take your time) Mama's Fish House in Maui and definitely do the helecopter in Kauai. One recommendation I have is to buy some Hawaiian music for your drives around the islands. We loved listening to some of the local music while sightseeing. Try some Iz (Israel Kamakawiwo) or Keali's Reichel (we saw him sing with the Maui Symphony Orchestra when we were there - beautiful - spiritual experience - think we were the only tourists in the crowd) also maybe some Beamer Brothers(Keola and Kapono) with the slack key guitar. Gosh - I wish I was there again!!!!
