National Parks-America's Best Idea
This is an interview with Ken Burns about his latest documentary: The National Parks-America's Best Idea which will begin Sept 26 on PBS.
It is also the story of how our government and many people, wealthy and not so wealthy, came together with the idea of preserving the natural beauty of our land for everyone to enjoy. Ken speaks to the idea that government does exist to improve the lives of the American people and that it always has...building human happiness is important for the common wealth of all the people, and government has a place in that equation.
It also talks about how we preserve some of the darker moments and places in our history as well and why this is important.
IMO Ken Burns is a genius filmmaker--and this latest effort may be his best yet. Ten years in the making, it took six years to shoot--PBS aired a preview a couple of weeks ago, and from that small clip, it appears to be 12 hours of fantastic work. (for those who do not want to watch the interview, just because Rachel aired it, there is probably a similar interview somewhere else, but probably not on Fox

) I hope you will all watch the series, I plan to see all of it, and probably buy the package when it is available. So far, I have visited many of the major national parks, some of the smaller ones, and the rest are on my list. IMO there can be no greater preservation, than the preservation of lands for all the public to enjoy. (yes, I am a card carrying member of The Trust for Public Land (
The Trust for Public Land--Conservation and Parks for People.) and have actively worked to preserve land in Florida, including right here in Grayton Beach and Stallworth Lake. That has been some of my best work!
