While eating breakfast with my mom this morning I was forced to watch the Martha Stewart show. She was doing some crafts with Kenny Rogers, and as they were talking he noted how nice it is to live in Atlanta. Then Martha announced that one of her new stepford wives communities will be built here soon, and he said yes "everyone should move to Atlanta, a lot of people do not know this, but it is one of the only cities in the world which does not experience natural disasters." WTF! I thought as I nearly choked and jumped through the television. Kenny Rogers explicitly said, "Atlanta does not have tornadoes, earthquakes, or hurricanes," and Martha said "Oh how lovely." Well, Mr. Rogers before you settle into your newly appointed position as Atlanta Real Estate Commissioner there are a few things you need to consider:
1) Tornadoes: in the early 80s a tornado struck the area between West Paces Ferry and Peachtree Road, damaging the Governor's Mansion. In 1998, a series of tornadoes damaged and destroyed numerous homes in the northern suburbs, and last year a tornado destroyed most of Atlanta Motor Speedway. Finally, EVERY year it seems, one to several will hit the outlying counties.
2) Earthquakes: True we do not have 6 or 7 pointers like the West Coast, but there is a minor fault line along the GA/AL border which did have a 5.4 rumbler in 2003, waking most Atlantans up at the crack of dawn and sending the major networks into a BREAKING NEWS frenzy.
3) Hurricanes: Yeah, dude this one we get, we live inland. But, we do get the remants of hurricanes from time to time...flooding, tornadoes and wind gusts.
