today while pondering some stir fry for lunch, i reached for the chili bean paste in the fridge. i noticed on the top cap the expiration date was jul 21 2006. i had used that paste 2 weeks ago. needless to say, i did not stir fry. can anyone beat that for using dated ingredients?

When daughter went to college, we didn't cook as often or as much as we did before. So I started putting dates on grocery items that don't have expiration dates on them so that I know what to or not to throw out. Especially food at the beach house. When you open it is more important than the expiration date for unopened items.

That old chili bean paste is probably a better deterrent for swine flu than the vaccine.

My family won't throw anything away - convinced that expiration dates are a conspiracy or a marketing ploy - and that if you just scrape off the mold growing on there it's still good. I make Papa Scooterbug eat it since he is so sure or bury it in the trash.

Last winter I took some cold medicine from '93! Needless to say, I went on a medicine cabinet cleaning spree after that!

One of the first things I do when I visit Scooterbro is go through the fridge - sometimes I will find leftovers buried at the back from MY last visit!

My friend, Amanda, and I were helping her mother unpack groceries once and were totally grossed out by the date on a can of spam: Sept/2010. I've never really been able to eat spam after that. Why, you ask?

Well, said groceries were unpacked in 1994. I really hope that it was a misprint on the can. :puke:

Doubt it. Spam and Twinkies are two foods you could take out of the package and leave out on a fence post for years and it'll still be as fresh as the day you put it there. :rotfl:

2006? Medicine from 1993?! Glad we're not the only ones!

We were at our family's second home over the weekend and pulled out some Ritz crackers, "Oh, they must be fresh since these sleeves have never been opened!" We couldn't find an expiration date but tried them anway. TERRIBLE! The cover of the box had Rachel Ray (younger and thinner), and a cook book offer that expired in March of 2007!

Anyone have an idea how long they run cookbook offers?
