I stand corrected on most state run mental hospitals. Sorry 'bout that.

Andy, Is it not both interesting and telling that some people have but one purpose in life it seems but to blame everything wrong in the WORLD on "right wing" conservative politics. I do not believe this will ever change and there will always be this adversarial divide between good people on both side. People killing other people in mass shootings is a threat to all of us. Why do we even try to make a political statement out of it like poppy or Jensky. I don't understand them at all. We should be asking much better questions than poppy's to start this thread. I have faith in mankind but I tell you it does sometime waiver...

mputnal3, I couldn't agree more!!!

AS I recall it was during the Reagan years that all the mental hospitals were closed and the crazies were pushed out onto the street and still remain there today living and breeding without proper care or treatment.

So, your answer to fix it is to blame a President from the 80's who is dead now?

You just contributed to the problem. It isn't about politics, its about common sense. Thanks for being so much like the initial poster.

Getting the mentally ill out of institutions wasn't just about saving money. Institutionalized patients rarely, if ever, got better. A lot of people wanted institutions shut down. The big clamor started in the 60's.

Teresa, RR didn't have the authority as President to shut down a STATE mental hospital. And even if it were due to lack of funding from the Feds, the President doesn't allocate health funding. The Congress does.

Here is a bit of a primer for people who like to bother themselves with actual facts, pesky as they may be.

As I remember, President Reagan threatened to withhold federal highway funding for states that did not enforce the 55 mph speed limit. Who allocates those funds, congress or the President? Politics can be tricky and sometimes those in power get what they want.

I saw this as well as a USA today article describing Kennedys mental health legislation which was never really realized. All of these lead up to the 80s. By then, institutions were being closed but without implementing state level programs that were suppose to provide better mental health care at smaller community based facilities.

Sometimes when you leave it up to the states, it's not the best outcome. Funding for mental health is just not a priority. And it should be. Our mental health facilities are now prisons.

It looks like the shooter was a Christian extremist who supported the Westboro Baptist Church. Interesting thing is that he praised Muslim extremists and appears to have had a problem with liberals in general. He is quoted as saying:

“Yes it’s true, Muslims are alone in shutting down liberals that mock their God. They have my complete Christian respect.”

Here are two sources that mention his hard line religious conservative ideology:

Not blaming Reagan for anything. Just making a recollection about crazy people in the eighties out on the street. Maybe it was just the increase in crazy homeless people that Reagan caused.
