To help you sleep better think of your tax dollars being spent on the programs you agree with and my tax dollars being spent on all the social programs you find appalling. I know this is simplistic, but we can't track each and everyone of our tax dollars.

Or you could just purchase insurance and avoid the penalties. We are required to carry auto insurance to prevent financial hardship on other drivers in case of an accident, is this also considered a form of socialism?

PIP and liability health insurance? In Florida I think you must carry $10,000 for each in auto insurance. If that was all you had to carry for health insurance, it would be an easier sell that this mandated "full-coverage" currently being proposed.

The biggest difference is that you can choose not to drive a car.

i say we push for nationalized legal representation. affordable and the same cost for everybody. let's push for the elimination of all private law firms, as they are inherently evil and profit driven. you'll never see that one pushed by a lib, even though on paper they are so concerned about helping out the little man.

I want a million dollars. Is that a right? Does everyone have a right to home ownership? I am not going to bat this one around because I believe everyone should have insurance. I also believe, have studied universal health care, written papers on the topic (which does not make me an expert by any means whatsoever), but I don't believe in its ability to work properly in this country without higher taxation and limited care delivered to patients.
Owning a house, having a million dollars are luxuries, or wants, not rights.

I don't think of basic medical care as a luxury. This is not a Third World country.

Is health insurance a right? I have a right to free speech because by speaking my mind I do not negatively effect the people around me. If I do, I can be punished (hate speech crimes). If health insurance is a right, it should not negatively effect those around you. If you have to take income from someone to pay for it, are you negatively affecting them in any way?

To put it another way, slavery as a right is wrong because it takes rights away from someone else. Is taking money away from one person to provide a right to another the same, or different? What about doctors, should they be forced to treat those that have government coverage even if they don't want to? Is that a restriction their freedoms? Is that right?
Whether we have a public option or not, we still pay for for the uninsured - in one way or another.

And since I think 1/700 dollars spent on healthcare in this country goes to the CEO of one company, there is a bit of room to negotiate IMO.

I really don't see how hard-working Americans asking for affordable health care can be compared with slavery. The more I discuss this topic with people, the more I am surprised at how many people do not have health care or are frustrated by their inability to afford or get health care. Most of these people work for small businesses or are self-employed - they aren't deadbeats or illegal aliens.

We already use tax dollars to provide free lawyers to those who cannot afford one.

We're on the same page. I work hard for my millions I haven't made, yet. ;-)

I believe everyone should have health insurance. Many make choices which preclude them from having it and that's their choice.

I think the country is heading in the right direction for reform, not a gov't operated plan. This is a good move and one that won't happen overnight, but will happen; and, I believe it will happen under this administration.

I was asking a question about what defines an individual right.

I was answering someone's question about the fines.

I agree, after reviewing your post I realize my response makes no sense.
On the second part, I was offering an alternative answer, I wasn't trying to dismiss your viewpoint.

I was ready to quit, got the prescription and found out it would cost $128.00 per month and they say you need to be on it for 6 months to a year. Seems like it would be cheaper for the insurance companies in the long run to pay for this. Your other points are valid, but it does seem a bit Big Brotherish.

I would just like to point out that a pack per day smoker in SOWAL who smokes marlboros pays about $150 per month for cigarettes!
