There is an ad in this week's Walton Sun for SWFD announcing tryouts for lifeguards. There is a swim and run test, and all hires will go through extensive training so it notes. Starting pay -- $12.50 per hour.

Can we just come watch? :dunno:

Wait. That's really good pay. What are the dates of the "season"?

I believe the "season" stated at the County Commissioners meeting was to include Spring Break. The ad does not state the info. Tryouts are held on Feb 18. There is a 500 meter swim followed by a 1.5 mile run.

The flip side is that it's not nearly enough pay to make it worth it for a lot of people who would otherwise be qualified for the job. I'm betting they end up hiring foreign or out of the area guards to some degree because the locals have seen how much abuse the cops get when they try to order people out of the water on double red flag days. (Do you know who I am? I paid all this money for a beach vacation and I'm going to go into the water no matter what you say!)

Wow, I lifeguarded for years during summer breaks in high school/college and we only got paid minimum wage.

Will the test require prospective guards to run in slow motion down the beach, blond hair-a-flying ala Baywatch?

$12.50 is minimum wage when one has to pay $2.50+ per gallon to commute into SoWal daily from the closest 'affordable' living area. The lifeguards should at least be pulling in upwards of $20 per hour.

I agree with Mouse...they won't need velvet ropes to hold back a crowd flocking to area to apply for these jobs...but I give the county an "A" for effort.
