I'm looking for some advice on a good all around spinning rod and reel combo to purchase that I can use for surf and bay fishing from a kayak. The more economical the better.
One rod and reel combo that will serve many different fishing applications will require some compromises. For example, a soft tip rod is usually better for trout fishing in the bay. But, for kayak trolling in the Gulf, you probably want a stiffer rod to handle the mackerels. A surf rod is usually 9-feet or longer. So, one combo can't be
perfect for all applications but you can put together a reasonable compromise.
Some things to keep in mind:
Kayak fishers usually stick with rods no longer than 7-feet. This allows for easier handling of the rod, giving you access to the tip without dunking the reel into the salt water.
If your budget allows, get a reel with water and rust resistant bearings, and maybe a sealed drag system. Some reels are designed for saltwater and some are not.
12 to 15 pound monofiliment line is probably your best bet. Smaller and you may break off; larger line tends not to cast as well.
I hope this helps. Naturally, we would welcome you to shop for your new combo at Yellowfin. We have some really good people here that can advise you on some suitable equipment for kayak fishing, surf fishing, bay fishing, etc.
