Has anyone taken this? My doctor put me on it today for the shingles pain. He wants to control the pain now while the rash is still present--he says that if I "tough it out" through the pain, I am at risk for long-term problems. (Postherpetic neuralgia--the pain can last months or years.)

Quite frankly, I've been stoned since lunch. I went to my piano lesson and my teacher kept looking at me like he was going to catch me--I think he asked me a half dozen times if I was okay.

It will be an interesting week, I'm sure!

I know you are worried about the effects of the Lyrica, but my aunt had a really bad case of shingles several years ago, with the rash spreading to her scalp. She did not want to take the pain medication, and she still has neurgalgia. She doesn't complain much, but occasionally, she will mention that the pain is still there.

The irony of a musical girl on Lyrica is too much for me. I am so sorry you have to deal with all this stuff. :sosad:

Oh, it's ironic all right...I think I play the piano better when I'm stoned. Go figure.

I asked my friend* who recommended this medication about it, and she said that she was stoned on it, too. She said that she just learned to work through it.

At least it has killed the pain. That's good news. The bad news is that I'm supposed to be controlling my schedule and stress level. My piano teacher gave me a long lecture about it yesterday, but finally conceded that there are seasons in life that are simply busy. I'm just going to have to learn to manage my time better, learn to take naps, tell some people to live without me, let some things go...

*um...my pastor's wife...!

I never learned how to take naps, but it does help quite a bit to find ways to relieve stress and learn to just say "puck it!"

That's the trick...

I think that lately I've just had a lot of legitimate stress--huge problems with my house, the death of another pet, a new job (two new jobs!) and all that work entails, grad school snafus, serious illnesses among friends and family, drought and politics... Honestly, I haven't had time to emotionally deal with this stuff, and I think it has finally come out physically in my nerve endings.

Thank Gawd we have drugs to deal with our problems so that we don't have to.

Yes, I was given this medication , but for a different reason. Neuropathy. It was not a good experience for me. In fact, I don't even remember the week I was taking it. Seriously, I don't remember a number of things that I was told I did and things I found.

Lyrica is an anti-seziure (sp) medication. It has been found to have other purposes, but I cannot take it at all and never will try again.

I'm starting to LIKE it! No pain...the phrase "comfortably numb" comes to mind. I was never much of a drinker and have never really done recreational drugs. I can drive and function on it; I'm just all happy and mellow. I could get used to this...

If I start swelling up or getting dry mouth, I'm done.

The side effects should wear off a little with time. Hang in there. This is a newer version of the drug that I told you about. It is crucial to limit the postherpatic neuralgia, as you are young. I have had patients that have excruciating pain for the rest of their lives! If the side effects become too much, consider asking your MD if you can reduce the dose. Good luck! I am glad to hear you are out of pain!
