Dear 30A Horticulturalists,

I have two Teddy Bear Magnolias in my yard. For some reason, one of them has a ton of small white specs on the leaves. They seem to be multiplying. I can actually scratch them off with a fingernail. Anyone know what this is, if it is harmful to the tree, or what I can do about it? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

My daughter the owner of Cruzan Gardens and my Master Gardner wife, say it is Magnolia Scale. It can, if allowed to multiply, kill the tree. Spray the tree with neem oil (organic) or malathion (chemical). Both should be available at any local garden center. BTW, Cruzan Gardens is located on St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. If you get there you might want to visit it.
