I too have a sixteen year old who loves Coldplay.
I don't like them as much as he does, but they are fine (stronger melodically than lyrically) and I agree with you about seeing a band live--it makes a difference.
Who was the warm-up band at the concert?

Interestingly, I love the White Stripes while my 16 year old only likes a couple of their songs. Saw them in concert last month and they were superb.
The warmup band was pretty good, they were called the Greenhornes.

Hi Cil. I'll have to ask my daughter for her list of all-time faves. She's been on a concert jag lately so she's really up-to-date about music (coincidentally she just got a job, so you know she's in funds). There's always music going on in our house...doesn't matter if anyone's home or not!

On the Christmas list this year? An IPod, of course.

My 12 y/o stepson is into Green Day right now. He puts his cd player and headphones on his lap in the car and wants to play the cd in my player. "It's much louder this way" he says!

Maybe some of you can help. I try to research lyrics sites to keep up with some of the music my daughter is getting exposed to. Age 13. Even reading the lyrics I can't always tell what the heck they're saying.

Any opinions on 1. Coheed and Cambria (One of her friends is into this band and I'm questioning this one).
2. Killers - Name alone makes me question.
:dunno:

"The Killers" are actually pretty good, if you like electronica stuff. (and I'm 47!)

Another Killers fan here. They've got something of an 80s pop vibe. Can't think of anything overtly offensive on their album.

Favorite new band of the last couple of years- Franz Ferdinand

Been there. Some of the lyrics you don't want to know what they're saying. Unfortunately, other kids will always be happy to share what you keep from your child. I just think of what I listened to as a teenager, and I turned out OK.

My daughter and I just spent the last hour listening to different songs on Rhapsody--I showed her my stuff, and we listened to hers, too.

Okay! Drumroll here. The latest sixteen year old favorites in this house are:

Guster. Fyl (daughter) says they're great in concert, and I know I love their song "Barrel of a Gun." It's always a plus when we can agree on music.

Fall Out Boy. Fyl is seeing them in concert in November so they must be good, because no one is treating her.

Motion City Soundtrack. Weird name for a group, but they're zippy enough.

Cil, White Stripes is more to my liking, too! When that guy sings "Seven Nation Army" with that gravelly throaty voice of his, wow! Fyl missed the opening band for Coldplay, so I can't tell you who opened for them.

River Otter, you're right on the money about hearing the music live and stocking up on the CDs right then and there! That's what we do. Last summer we went to hear Big Bad Voodoo Daddy do their New Orleans sound and now every time I hear that song "Don't You Feel My Leg" I just about crack up because I visualize the lead singer on stage hamming it up.

Rita, Killers are okay according to She Who Knows. Fyl says they're sort of like White Stripes.

You know what I think is funny? When Fyl and I are in the car and the radio is on one of her stations and a song comes on that's a remake. I start singing the lyrics and she never fails to give me this look of complete shock like I'm some kind of genius mother. Like how could her uncool mother KNOW the lyrics of HER songs? Sometimes I don't have the heart to clue her in.

Thanks guys! This makes me feel more comfortable.

Franz Ferdinand? Associated with Weezer? Seems I've seen those names connected. (As you can see, I'm not up on newer music.)

Suncat - I agree w/you. Just feel I ought to educate myself at least a little regarding some of these bands.

We grew up in the 60s and 70s and enjoy the fact that some of the kids have an interest in retro music. Our daughter thought it was pretty cool when she could play our old albums on the turntable. Even exposed her to Alice's Restaurant and had a good discussion about the protest music of that era.
