Where does personal responsibility come in this mess? So many people have become too dependent on the government (federal, state and local) to solve all their everyday woes and when a catastrophe comes along they are paralized to help themselves. I don't want to be harsh, just thinking and typing outloud.

:clap_1: I think this is probably the most profound statement I have heard since Katrina hit. This is what it's really all about. Our society has become so dependant on others to care for us, that we seem to have lost the ability to care for ourselves. Government has for so long taken responsibility (and accountability) for us - FROM us - that we no longer hold ourselves responsible or accountable for things that we should. It's a sickness. We self-inflicted with perceived helplessness.

Do you wonder what Michael Brown is thinking now? Suppose he's relieved that he's been removed from his hurricane relief duties?

He's probably riding his horse off into the sunset, marveling at his good fortune!

Beachdreamer...I remember being a little cautious when typing that...not wanting to sound callous. Of course gov't has helped...but some of the best and most inspiring stories have come from neighbors and strangers alike helping out those in need.
