Dear, we could be the caped crusaders. Let's kill it.
Did they give you a choice of operating systems? Maybe you can take it back and have it changed to XP?

I'm in!

They didn't give me a choice. I was looking into changing it to XP, because that's what I'm used to... Unfortunately, there's a whole bunch of stuff they were telling me to do that I didn't understand, so I figured I'd be better off just getting used to VIsta.

I can navigate my way around a website, and do all sorts of little shortcuts, but once someone starts talking about "maximum internal hard drive capability" or whatever it was, and using all sorts of cyberwords, I'm lost.

I just got a new desktop computer for business applications. I had heard mixed reactions about Vista, so when I ordered the computers I wanted XP but the seller told me that MS would be discontinuing updates of XP next June.
So, I started setting the computer and I was so excited, yeah, a big screen cause I am going blind, a big bass boombox thing almost as large as my computer with wee little speakers, and can be heard down the street, because I am going deaf too, a pretty screen pops up with this beautiful circulating photos.
I'm in heaven.

Then..........Windows Defender.
I need to know how to kill this thing. As I was installing programs, constant pop ups. Was I allowed to install the program? Duh, the Windows Defender is stupid because I just delivered the baby. Installed another program that froze up and I had to turn the computer off. Turned it back on and the Windows Defender said that some start programs were blocked. Maybe because I haven't hooked it up to the internet yet?

I haven't had the time yet to mess with it all yet, but I think I may have to buy a cape and kill it.

1. Yes, Vista would rather you were on the net, but that will not stop you from doing what you need to do.

2. To "kill" defender:
Open Control Panel.
Select Classic View.
Select Windows Defender.
Select Tools.
Select Options.

At the very bottom, under Administrator Options, uncheck "Use Window Defender".

You will get several nag boxes which will warn you of impending doom, then Windows Defender will be disabled.

Now, I DO recommend that you turn it back on (same process, in reverse) when you are done installing your software.

I have not had any major problems with Vista - I leave Defender to do it's thing, and that way I can stop every little program from installing useless updates every time I start up the browser.

My moms Mac has been sitting quietly, untouched since I bought her the pc. I thought about asking her to let me take it to my house to get it out of her way.

You can drop it off at my place. I'll bet I can get it to run well.

I understand where you are going with your argument, but you are speaking of viruses, or at least that is the angle I'm getting from it.

Macs are harder to hack due to the underlying OS which is Unix.

Windows uses a database driven OS that is horribly prone to viruses and even basic hacks such as macros.

Go ahead and search for hacking a mac on google, it's either a contest that took hackers days to win or just cute ways to customize your mac book. I've worked for large companies that were victims of browserless (not related to an internet browser such as I.E. or Firefox) viruses. Every PC in the building would go down, but the Mac users were happily (not really they still had to work while we sat around) continuing to work as their OS's were unaffected.

Mac OS has been based on UNIX since around 2001. I have been using them since OS 1 in 1986. I actually still have that system floppy disc. (single sided!) I have owned 10 since then. Out of all those, I only had one problem and it was a hardware issue. They are worth the extra price for piece of mind. I have to use a PC laptop for work. I attatch an Apple mouse to it to feel a little like home. You know you can run Windows on macs now. The joke is always if you want a good PC, get a Mac. :rotfl:
