Sometimes all your music is not in the iTunes folder. iTunes has a feature to consolidate all your music in one place. You need to make sure you have done that before you drag and drop. Make sure you get the music folder as well as the library document. You may need to authorize the new computer for iTunes as well.

This is very interesting, as we may be facing the same issue in a few weeks.

(Or I can use this as an excuse to keep the new computer for myself :D)

Exactly, that's why I asked if the export feature was used from itunes.
Maybe you could try burning it to disc from the export feature in Itunes. Just check that you have enough space on the disc. Sounds like you have a lot of songs. You might need two discs.

I've never had to do this but I'll give it a shot.

Basic question first though. Is your iPod large enough to store all your iTunes music? Do you have an iPod?

I don't store any music on my iTunes. Once I have transferred my CD music to the Apple file type thru iTunes, I copy it over to my iPod and then delete the file from my computer. It's the 40g model, so space isn't an issue even with 5 movies.

Sooo, if I bought a new computer and were so inclined to store my music on it, couldn't I just sync my iPod with all my music on it over to iTunes on my new computer? I don't see how my iPod or iTunes program would know the difference between it being my old computer or a new one.

SJ, actually, iTunes makes it fairly easy to transfer your purchased music from one computer to another. There's even a simple button/feature that helps you do that. All that stuff made the transfer, as did things downloaded directly from CDs far as I can tell. They don't make it easy to move other things, though. Music downloaded from other sites, for example.
rdelong, I did use the Consolidate Library function to "gather" all the music together, so I'm not sure where things went wrong. I suppose it's possible that I did this after Mr. Pod had dumped the files on the hard drive...he said he wasn't able to drag the entire Library folder onto the hard drive, though; you're forced to click and drag the individual folders. Which makes it hard to understand why some songs/CDs from an artist would have made the transfer, but others didn't. Unless...back to the original train of thought, some of it was elsewhere and didn't get consolidated.
Mangy, since only about (only!) 300 songs have gone missing, I think I may just burn these onto disc and transfer to the new computer. I suppose if I discovered that all the music is now consolidated and appears to be together, I could wipe out the library on the new computer and "re-dump" it. Though that makes my head hurt. Can you come over? :D

TNJed, I have a 30G iPod
And, that's the problem, because the computer and/or the iTunes program does "know," though I don't know enough about any of it to explain how. When you plug in your iPod to a new computer, a message comes up saying that that particular iPod is tied to another iTunes library. Then the only option it gives you is if you want to replace the iPod's contents with the library in the new computer, which is probably empty, so that would wipe out your iPod if you said yes.

Pea, I'm about as zippedy-doo computer inept as the Kitty. I opened up your thread just to see exactly what kind of advice she was giving you. :rotfl:

So wouldn't it be smarter to download the songs from other vendors like RealPlayer, where you weren't limited to only one copy of a song? You could then load them to your iPod, as well as have a CD copy, and copies on each of your computers.
