My hometown was the home of the Dallas Cowboys before there was a Texas Stadium (soon to be demolished). When I was growing up, there was a cow pasture there. I loved that I could stay out until way after dark, play baseball with my neighbor friends, walk to my aunt's little store about a mile away and charge whatever I wanted. I always got in trouble at the end of the month. My bill was probably about 3.00 for the whole month. I loved that there were drive-ins, drive-ins for food, and my grandmother's cooking. I loved that I drug home every freakin' stray animal I found and that she usually ended up letting me keep them. I loved that my best friends parents were like my second parents and that I went everywhere with them. I loved that we never got in any real trouble, but we sure had lots of funn.

My hometown: Point Washington. And the suburbs of Santa Rosa Beach, Grayton Beach, and Seagrove Beach. Collectively known as South Walton.

Nope, nothing to see there :D

My perfect beach
New Orleans. The food, of course. Not just the well-known restaurants, but so many little holes in the wall with great food. And most of us cooked that way, too. I learned to make a roux at a faily young age, though my crawfish and shrimp boiling skills still leave much to be desired. And the architecture. I used to ride the entire streetcar route just to gaze at all those beautiful homes along St. Charles Avenue. I remember every Mardi Gras my dad would pay to park our motorhome at a gas station along St. Charles, and from there we'd wander uptown looking at all the costumes and characters. The day's top prize was a gold Zulu coconut. I remember cruising the lakefront on Sunday afternoons with my girlfriends, all of us crammed into my '68 Mustang convertible. Loved the zoo and Audubon Park, the French Quarter, the Fauburg and the riverfront. I was fortunate that it was my Catholic high school's tradition to hold graduation ceremonies at St. Louis Cathedral. Could there be a more beautiful setting?

Back then the crime problem was confined to certain areas that you learned to avoid. Later crime became so ubiquitous that there was no avoidance, only vigilance. I don't want to live there now, but I wouldn't trade growing up there for anything.

My childhood hometown, Killeen/Fort Hood, was so different in 60's, 70's from the commercial overgrown blight that it is today, I can hardly begin to describe. It was still a country, rural oriented town, struggling with the fact that the largest armored military base in the free world snuggled up next to it. There was one high school and Friday night football was a big deal, especially against our rival, Temple. When a Dennys was built (a 24 hour sit down restaurant!) THAT was a big deal. I remember Girl Scouts and bowling league, being in the automotive Explorer Post where my best friend and I both had boyfriends. Always hearing the sound of artillery fire booming and helicoptors flying overhead. Skating rink on post and lots of summer swimming at the officer's club. Cars pulled over and people got out and stood at attention when taps played at 5pm. Spent lots of time at the library, both public and on post. Sitting on the driveway every 4th of July watching the fireworks show at Pennington Field. Downtown parades and the interesting (illicit?) activities on Avenue D. Jane Fonda coming to protest the war at the Oleo Strut. Lots of soldiers coming and going to Vietnam. Lots of kid coming and going at school as dads were reassigned. Buying my first alcohol in Harker Heights for graduation night- still can't stand the thought of cold duck!

Thinking back on the world at that time is both happy and painful- so many reminders of how the world has changed.

Daniel Field or Bush Field?

Daniel. Not sure how long you've been with Delta, but I think it was a Delta pilot that got the airports confused and landed a 737 at Daniel in the mid 80's. Actually, Air Traffic Control confirmed he was on approach for the correct airport as well. What a commotion - very short runway and it sounded like it was crashing in my back yard it was so low over town.

They had to dump fuel and transport px by bus the next morning to Bush so the aircraft would be able to lift!

Pilot was applauded for not landing on top of my HS or in the middle of traffic! And, he did take off perfectly the next morning. ;-)
