Yesterday at lunch time I turned onto 98 heading home. There was a large beer truck in front of me. I got into the left lane and was ahead of him when I got to the 395 turning lane. The light for 98 was yellow and I had not quite made it to the stop line when I heard a horn coming fast behind and to my right. The light was so red that cars were starting to move from 395 but here comes that beer truck barreling at 60 miles an hour, blowing his horn to warn those cars not to move because there was no way he was stopping.
Luckily nobody moved and we all proceeded unscathed.
Fast forward to yesterday afternoon. I'm bringing my kids home from school. Sitting in the turning lane at 395 & 98 telling them about the daggone beer truck. The arrow signals me to make my turn. The car in the westbound left lane stops. Luckily I notice that the car coming in the right lane has no intention of stopping. He is still going about 65 miles an hour and coming fast. I was halfway through my turn but able to stop in time. I laid on the horn, the guy didn't even look over or slow down.
I just looked at my son in the passenger's seat and was filled with the horrifying image of what a 65 mile an hour SUV would have done to my two kids and I in our little Mazda3. Spencer would have been killed instantly and who knows if Hailey and I would have lived through it. We would have been three more flower memorials at the intersection.
Thankfully (?) I expect other drivers at that intersection to be mindless and dangerous. If it had been a visitor, I don't know that they would have hesitated before making the turn.
