We stayed at Pointe Santo when we were there in April this year. A bit older complex, more dated units but adequate and well maintained. Their lagoon has an alligator in it...

The prices at Pointe Santo typically are slightly lower because of the dated feel...the place fills up with retired snowbirds looking for a bargain during winter season.

This is another reason to stay as close to Captiva or on Captiva. The water is much better. Everytime I've been the water was a pastale blue. The shell dust makes it that way I guess.

Ok, I tried spell check on "pastale" and couldn't find anything so I guess it's wrong :dunno:

Bless your heart!!! pastel? I think pastale is Italian for pastel. :D

Our unit was gulf front but a true 70's time capsule

Most of them are like that, aren't they. We're awfully spoiled on 30-A in regard to decor (praise the lord). :D

At the time (5 or 6 years ago) that 70's time capsule was for sale for $1,100,000 with absolutly no updates! I figured if they are getting over $1,000,000 for this POS then I'm buying in SoWal!!

I'm making a list of things to do. I've been checking the different places you all have recommended on the Internet (Vrbo and other sites, as well as the home sites of different communities and comments on travel advisor). The general feeling seems to be that the places are old (not too much of a problem for me as long as it's clean and fresh because the house we live in is almost 100 years old) and tend to be individually managed so upkeep is inconsistent. Sanibel may work better for us than Captiva because with two teenagers it's probably better to be where there is some action, even a little bit of action.

Frankly, it sounds like just about any place would be fine if it's a 3 bedroom (which are in short supply) and if it's clean, fresh, and not too dated (classic is OK, green stinky shag rugs and old linen with pills are not OK).

Trip Advisor is interesting because people's comments give the exact condo #s and whether the unit was nice or not. Owners have a chance to respond and do sometimes.

And, Miss Kitty, I subscribe to Southern Living so I'll see if I can find the May issue.

And I've been keeping notes on all of the recommendations of things to do...

Of course I'll post my own trip report when we go... but that will be in February.

Well, thanks everyone for your ideas. I booked a place (yes, I'm a planner) for the last week in February at Pointe Santo on Sanibel (we figured Sanibel would be better than Captiva for teens because it has more going on). It is indeed an older complex, as many are there, but I'm hoping the 3 bedroom we booked (3 bedrooms seem more difficult to find) will be in very good shape (the vrbo site said it's rated "platinum" so we'll see). It's a first floor unit overlooking a lagoon and then the beach. It seems there is indeed an alligator (maybe more) in the lagoon so perhaps we'll have a visitor when we're on the lanai. I'll be sure not to nap with the door open. Anyway, I've heard the units differ in quality quite a bit depending on whether the owner takes good care of them or not. Of course, a detailed trip report will follow. And I owe a trip report for our early July trip to Maine (Maine is awesome).
