I like the way Scooty thinks - I'm enjoying the IPod touch right now and can text for free from it (where there's service). My cell is basic and I chose not to pay for texting. Cheap and I have all I need! Wouldn't be enough for most folks though.......

I'm really confused now. An IPod touch does what exactly? It does text, but not phone? and what else?

If you are in a wifi hotspot, you can use voice over IP apps and some 3rd party text apps. I bought my daughter an iPod 4 touch for Christmas and it is pretty neat. I can even facetime call her when she is on wifi. (video telephone)

I gave up my cell phone altogether!
Figured it might be beneficial to travel "BACK to the future". It has actually made me feel unexpectedly empowered (in a rebellious kinda way :D).

That sounds wonderful! Good for you! A couple years ago my phone battery died when I was at a dog show and it was one of the best afternoons. No one to interrupt my day!

If my husband did not travel and both girls live out of state, I would be there with you. My job has my out and about so there is no way to contact me in case of an emergency. How did we live years ago...really well it seemed.

Great ideas! I use it mostly for texting and calls. I will try my friend's Driod and see if it is IWIWT friendly:dunno:

If your gainful employer INSISTS you have it for work, that's probably a modern must.

Beyond that (actually GIVEN that)... I've decided that most "Emergency" is an uber-defined construct of the cell-phone-marketing-world-illusion that has convinced us that... well... if we're ever-connected, we have the power to alter & control fate... and death. I CALL B.S.

If you have opt-out-wean-off options in your life... I encourage you to give it a try.
I was surprised at how freeing and empowering it felt not only to MYSELF, but also to over-connected-over-burdened (yes... independent) BELOVEDs!

In part, I DO attribute my independent "state-of-being" to NOT always having been "connected". Certainly there were times of strife that forced me to into creative problem solving. Having said ALL that, I admit that I'm NOT a parent of minors in today's modern world.

A friend recently (proudly) justified the fact that SHE isn't yet on facebook is due to the fact that she hasn't "yet" given in to her 10 yr old child's plea for a facebook account... therefore, temporarily, eliminating the need to waste time with parental "spying" mechanisms.

Oi Vey... I'm glad I'm JUST an aunty.

Off buttons are wonderful things to make sure you control the electronics instead of the other way around! :D

My theory is that if it is THAT important, you should probably call 9-1-1, not me. ;-)
