I have thought long and hard about what I am going to post and I will admit up front that this issue hits very close to home for me personally. I'm going to try and remove my personal feelings from my comments but I believe people have the right to know that things are not always what they "appear".

I'll also admit that I know very little about how non profits operate, how they are structured or much about the day to day operations. What I have learned is there is generally a "board" of individuals from the Community that the non profit serves, that serve in an advisory capacity on how money is allocated in the community, who to help, etc. There may even be a CEO and an administrator. A well run non profit does not discriminate based on race, religion or sexual orientation. I sorta think of them as a "church" without the sermons serving their Community and helping people who for whatever reason find themselves in a precarious situation and are unable (through no fault of their own) to help themselves. I also understand that non profits are simply unable to help everyone because of budgets constraints, lack of funding, lack of resources or whatever the case might be.

What I think is inherently wrong is for a 501 c 3 non profit to purport themselves as a Community outreach program helping the less fortunate in the Community when by their very nature they are not structured in such a way that allows for an advisory board to oversee how community resources are spent or how grants awarded to the agency produce results that benefit the Community. I also think its inherently wrong for 1 person to be the CEO, the Administrator and the Director and have an alleged "board" of 2 people, who just happen to be close personal friends of yours. When one person is the final say in all aspects of the non profit the result is one person playing "God" and making decisions that negatively impact the Community which they allege to serve because in reality people are not being served unless 1 person says so.

With that said...there are some wonderful non profits in Walton County who have struggled for years in our community to do great things to help people with very limited resources. They don't get the fancy, big money grants but they do treat people with dignity and respect and do the very best they can to help everyone who walks through their doors.

To talk down to people (especially the elderly) makes you look like a monster, particularly when those people have come to you with their hearts literally in their hands looking for a "hand up, not a hand out". People are talking about how you purport yourself, your nasty attitude and how you have treated others. It is going to come full circle on you and believe me when I tell you that had certain individuals known what they didn't now know then (about the structure of your organization) trust me when I tell you that you would not have been posing for photo ops with a huge check in your hand and in all likelihood would NOT have received that grant.. They are going to carefully monitor your business operations over the next year and I sincerely hope that you are going to actually be the type of organization you profess to be and really help people.

The very least you could do is start being honest with people, actually answer your phone (staffed by volunteers) in your office while you sit in that same office on your cell phone on facebook. It would also be refreshing if you would actually call the clients back that you purport to help and let them know that you have no intention of helping them instead of making them wait on a phone call that never comes or tell them that if they are not happy with your services (especially when they have never benefited from them) you would be happy to pull their application and they can go elsewhere for help.

You may have fooled people into believing that you have single-handedly created this awesome community outreach program but the proof is in the pudding. You are not what you profess to be and the next time you talk about what a "Christian" you are, you might actually want to take your bible to Church with you and ask yourself WWJD?

Bottom line...watch how you treat people. Karma is a funny thing.

Legitimate non profits post annual reports on their websites so that people can decide for themselves if the non profit is worthy of their money and/or if the non profit is actually helping the Community it purports to help.

Do the research folks...don't just throw your money away because someone told you it was a legitimate non profit doing great things in the Community.

I was prepared to let this thread go but recent events have been brought to my attention and I am just not willing to let it go. For fear of having my posts deleted because I have violated some policy on SoWal I am going to remove the name of this organization from my original post which I have shared on my facebook page.

There are fine upstanding people in this Community being hurt by this non profit and I am simply not willing to sit back and say or do nothing when WE can affect change! Since I'm afraid to post the name of this organization for fear of my post being removed message me and I'll tell you who it is!

Several days ago I had a conversation with a woman I have known for over 20 years in this Community who mentioned to me that her home had sold (she was downsizing) and had a ton of furniture she needed to get rid of and she also called this non profit to come get things she was not going to be able to take with her in the move....china, expensive furniture, beds...all quality stuff. The response was..."we are staffed by volunteers" and no one ever showed to pick up the donations. Caring and Sharing was the proud beneficiary of my friends things and a burden was lifted as she is elderly and on oxygen 24/7 and not able to move all the things she could not take with her.

Yesterday I had a conversation with someone I have known at least 20 years in this Community as an upstanding, honest, hard working individual. Through no fault of their own they found themselves unemployed and unable to find work. As a result they also sought the services of this non profit community outreach entity. They were assured they would get the assistance they sought so they used what little money they had to pay some smaller bills. The help never came, no one ever bothered to return their calls to tell them why and now they are living without electricity and in real danger of losing their home. AGAIN, I want to stress this is not how a non profit should operate. You don't treat people in this fashion that you purport to help in your community. You don't talk down to people or tell them if they don't like how they are being treated by you that you will pull their application and they can go elsewhere for help! You also should have a Board of Directors through which all applications for help are vetted! You should not be a one woman operation making all the final decisions about who will or wont get help!! Bottom line for me is you are nothing more than a tax shelter for your family and it will be a cold day in hell before I ever donate items to your organization again. Caring and Sharing has done more to help people in this community than the ****** has ever helped and they treat people with dignity and respect which is obviously something you know every little about!!

This last incident was just posted to my timeline.
"My friend has 4 children and she signed up for help with Christmas through this organization needless to say they never helped her...said she didn't attend a meeting or something so there were no presents for her children. They never told her about a meeting just kept giving her the run around. I will never shop or donate anything to this organization . Caring & sharing is awesome to this community both of them".

I have found that a good way to help our community is to promote people and organizations who are doing it right. Ignore them that don't do right. They never win.

As I mentioned before...Legitimate non profits post annual reports on their websites so that people can decide for themselves if the non profit is worthy of their money and/or if the non profit is actually helping the Community it purports to help. I can find no annual reports!

Do the research folks...don't just throw your money away because someone told you it was a legitimate non profit doing great things in the Community. This organization has also received "glowing" press reviews (by people unwilling to actually investigate and/or report the news anymore except for police reports) and has been supported by some of the power hitters in this Community including the Sheriff who has used them (by his own admission) for "vetting" the poor for events the Sheriff Department hosts/sponsors. That is not to say the Sheriff's events were or are not charitable or did not help many of those in need. Those events have nothing to do with the responsibilities of a non profit organization that purports itself as a Community Outreach program. It's about what the non profit personally does in their Community not what they do in "conjunction with". I want to know what the Communities money that YOU take in as a non profit organization is doing to help those in need in OUR Community. I want to know what and where the money from my Communities donations to YOUR organization are going and how they benefit my Community!!

I obviously know of several instances of where the money hasn't gone and I have no reason to doubt the validity of each of these stories or to doubt the character of those who told me of their own personal experiences with this particular non profit.

So there's allegedly a 501 in Walton that is possibly operating in an unethical or suspicious manner, its supported / promoted by local higher ups (to include the sheriff's office)...

No way! Not in Walton County. It's all unicorns and rainbows here. Nothing to see, please move along...

(Would love to know name) ;)

I did not say unethical or suspicious. I said that a well run 501 3 c lists annual reports on their website so that the Community it serves can see their money in action. I said I want to know what that non profit personally does in their Community not what they do in "conjunction with". I want to know what the Communities money that YOU take in as a non profit organization is doing to help those in need in OUR Community. I want to know what and where the money from my Communities donations to YOUR organization are going and how they benefit my Community

I would like to see a list of it's board members and to be able to actually communicate my concerns to someone other than the ONE person I am depending on to "vet" my application fairly if things don't go according to the process that you, as a 501 c 3, have instituted. I want the board who governs your actions to explain to me why my application sat in a file on your desk and I never got the help I asked for or even a phone call to explain why. Things happen, I get that! People fall through the cracks in life everyday but what can we as a Community do to help ensure that the cracks are sealed in our Community and we are able to help each other to stand on our own feet. What can we do to make sure your organization is able to help everyone who walks through your doors, if not with money you have received through your organization, at the very least with helpful resources people who have come to you for help can utilize. Telling someone "I will pull your application and you are welcome to go elsewhere" doesn't endear you to your community, it alienates you from the very people you profess to want to help. In fact it pi$$es people off and they take to social media to vent their frustrations. (I'm Guilty!)

I want to know why it was so difficult to pick up a phone and explain your actions (or lack thereof) while I sat by mine willing it to ring because I was as sick as a dog with blood sugars well over 400 (stroke potential in the making) after being hospitalized for an emergency appendectomy and hernia repair and medicated so heavily that I couldn't understand your condescending attitude after a Walton County Official contacted you because I needed help with medications...1 $4.00 prescription which I did personally take care of but the more expensive pain medication (I couldn't afford) that you absolutely told me you would not help with making me feel as if I were some drug addict off the streets looking for a free fix.

The son spoke today of how stressed this individual is and how she hears more complaints than compliments. If that's the case perhaps it's time to look inward and let people like the Pastor (that went to you for help) and then offered you his own assistance, help you reorganize and make the process run more efficiently to be a better community outreach program!

I want to thank Danny Glidewell also. During my recuperation I sought out his advice and he did offer alternatives to the dilemma I found myself in and I was able to get the assistance I needed.

Do most nonprofits post reports on their website? Many don't even have a website. And if they do they might not know how to update it. Have you asked personally for a report and been denied? I find this thread to be very passive aggressive and a lame attempt to strike back at an organization on a public website. If they deserve to be criticized then do it in a professional way not a personal one.
