(Milton, FL.) Waterway access, boating safety, navigation, derelict vessels, near-shore artificial reefs, economic impacts and planning to maintain regional waterways are important issues in NW Florida. In order to address these issues, the NW Florida Regional Workshop on boating and waterways management will be held in Milton, Florida, August 16 and 17. The workshop will examine innovative strategies that will assist regional managers, county planners, policy-makers, and other marine industry interests as they attempt to balance economic vitality with ecologically sound management practices along Northwest Florida's waterways. The workshop will allow participants to learn about best management practices for waterway management based on policies and techniques from around the state. This workshop is hosted by Florida Sea Grant, University of Florida IFAS/ Santa Rosa County Extension and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
The first day of the workshop will consist of presentations by local and state experts. The second day of the workshop will be a half day facilitated planning session designed to allow participants to conduct strategic planning for boating and waterways management in Northwest Florida.
August 16 presentations will include: ·Non-Economic Tool to Evaluate Florida’s Marine Infrastructure ·Statewide Boating Access Facilities Inventory and Economic Study ·Government Regulation and the Rights to Navigation and Anchoring in Florida ·Public engagement for recreational waterway access in a rural coastal county (Taylor) ·The New Statewide Derelict Vessels database ·Funding Opportunities ·The Clean Marina Program ·Near-shore artificial reef projects: permitting, deployment and challenges

Strategic Planning for Boating and Waterway Management in Northwest Florida
Facilitators: Chris Verlinde, Santa Rosa County Extension and Garin Davidson, Florida Sea Grant
Objectives – the planning session participants will work together to: 1. Prioritize waterway issues and discuss strategies to address them. 2. Provide input on key issues and next steps that Florida Sea Grant, partnering planners, resource managers, attorneys, and policy makers can accomplish. 3.
