Obama's approval ratings are tanking FAST.

Obama's Poll Numbers Are Falling to Earth - WSJ.com

GW's approval rating at the beginning of his first term was way, way below Obama when he started his term. However, Obama's approval rating is the same as GW's at the similar point in their administrations (pre 9/11/2001 numbers because GW's numbers were skewed for quite some time after 9/11). However, Obamas disapproval ratings are actually worse than Bush's at the same point in time.

Fortunately for the country, most people are beginning to get it.

I think you've underestimated Obama. Through all this, he has been restrained and professorial. He's going to let the extreme right crazies drive the moderates right into his arms and the Republican Party will left out to dry when all this washes out. There's only so much fizz left after you open a carbonated bottle and let the genie out. Right now, America is thriving on this drama, but in the end, pragmatism always wins.

Another thoughtful and insightful response from Bob. And from whoever thanked you for that one (LSam). You are an absolute riot.

Ee, i, ee, i, o. :rotfl: (you will need to go over to the thread on teabaggers to get that one).

I am not impressed by the insta polls and don't understand why anyone else is either. C'mon Fisher, don't you deliberate a little bit more than that?

I've done a fair bit of reading this week of articles and essays written by and quoting noted GOPers describing what went on behind the scenes in the Bush administration, and I don't see how "comparing" them using a snapshot of poll numbers makes any sense at all.

By every account they are completely different people with different leadership styles. I only care about leadership and solutions at this point, not ideology. It is possible that Obama equivocates too much about everything to ultimately be a good leader, but that is the flip side of being a wonkish type who actively and famously seeks opinions and viewpoints that differ from his own.

He is the virtual opposite of Bush, whose administration was politically and not policy oriented (at least on the domestic side), and who famously hated to be challenged by his underlings and is said by many to have rarely asked policy questions about anything.

I do agree that history will show that Obama has revealed his inexperience too many times early in his term, but I also believe he is very sharp and learns fast and could very well end up as successful as so many have hoped.

Not one of the major issues he is dealing with is remotely easy to solve. I love our country but we have a lot of big problems to wrestle with, many of which have been building for decades. Why we think daily or weekly polling is going to tell us anything substantive about the effectiveness of this president is beyond me.

I agree that polls are only a snapshot and we won't know how well Obama fares until he either does or does not get reelected. If reelected, we will need to wait until the end of the second term to get the full picture.

However, his disapproval ratings are certainly headed in the wrong direction right now. Without the long term support of the voters, he will not be able to make much headway. Especially if he can't hold a majority in congress in the next election cycle.

Even the Huffington Post has commented on the negative trends.

And, no President ever has it easy. Problems are not a new occurrence now that Obama is in the White House. Every President has been bombarded by problems from the time they entered to the time they exited the White House. From the Cold War, to Vietnam, to the oil crisis, to the recessions, the Iranian hostage crisis, the stock market crash, the first gulf war, 9/11, etc, etc.

Time will tell, but the first nine months haven't proved to be kind to Obama.

Here's my thought....fisher, I would have maybe read your linked article about poll numbers, but I am put off by your glee at this poll. I understand you are not a fan of the present administration, but the clapping smilie addition was a little over the top for me. I like hearing from both sides of the political spectrum, but this looks childish to me. IJS.
