Obama awarded 2009 Nobel Peace Prize - CNN.com

President Obama was awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday.

The first African-American to win the White House, Obama was praised by the Norwegian Nobel Committee for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the committee said. "His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population."

The committee also said Obama has "created a new climate in international politics."

The announcement came as a surprise -- Obama's name had not been mentioned among front-runners -- and the roomful of reporters in Oslo, Norway, gasped when he was named....

All we are saying...is give peace a chance.

I think this is a great reason to win - his "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."

His efforts are being noticed, and that is a good thing. I am proud that our president is being praised for peace.

i'm not really sure what to say.

Surprising, yes, because he wasn't listed as a frontrunner, but for very good reasons was the unanimous choice. Read the article.

I think it is pretty wonderful that our leader is recognized as someone who the entire world looks to as representing the idea that things will get better someday.

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the committee said.

I agree with JDarg...what a wonderful recognition and how great for our president and our country to be recognized as standing for peace and cooperation among the countries of the world.

Congratulations to President Obama!

I just caught a clip and due to his speeches and promises to leave Iraq, this has had quite an impression upon those in Oslo. Norway despises war as do many. I look forward to the day we are out of Iraq.
