Right here!
What is so unrealistic about me wanting us to:
1) use both existing and future technology to use less energy
2) have each of us work to conserve energy
3) shift a percentage of our energy from oil to solar and wind power? :dunno:

Nothing. When do you think you can get the other 309,999,999 to follow your lead?

An excerpt from what I received this from Senator Bill Nelson of FL today:

I filed legislation (S. 3308) that would hold off on any new oil and gas drilling until a joint Department of Interior and Homeland Security investigation is complete and a report documenting the necessary steps to prevent future accidents is ready. My bill won?t shut down platforms currently producing oil, but it will allow us to protect our environment and economy from the risks created by drilling irresponsibly close to our shores until we have answers.

As we work to protect our State from future damage, we must continue to address the cleanup effort and the financial impact that this will have on Florida?s economy. BP and any other parties responsible for this disaster are compelled to pay for the cleanup, but current law requires them to pay only $75 million dollars in additional damages. These extra damages may include environmental effects and the financial losses suffered by businesses, including tourism, which rely on our beaches, and the commercial fishing industry, which relies on our waters. I have cosponsored legislation to raise the liability limit for the responsible parties from $75 million to $10 billion. The oil industry is responsible for this disaster, and I refuse to let them off the hook for the widespread damage that it will cause.

Me too! Only took 10 days from when I emailed him to receive a canned response letter. :bang:

I am working on it - the current disaster is certainly helping people take my arguments seriously!

Why don't we do that, plus, produce more domestically, invest in alternatives like nuclear and solar, and cross our fingers and hope that some day electric cars like the volt become cheaper, less *fugly*, more efficient, and do zero to sixty in six seconds. ;-)

If we don't want to do as much drilling in the gulf, lets open up areas like ANWAR where oil spills aren't an issue.

(Queue the responses from envormentalists and teddy kennedy's ghost: NO to nuclear, NO to ANWAR drilling to save the polar bears, NO to solar farms because it hurts pack rat habitats, NO to wind farms because it hurts the birds and wrecks the view.. etc.. YES to, well, YES to.. nothing. Everybody should just stop using so much oil.)

God no to nuclear. I mean don't we see what happens when people say "it won't happen, things are safe?" Remember the visions of Chernobyl?

Drilling in Gulf will NOT change our dependence on foreign oil one iota. My facebook status said this when the disaster first happened:

ALL drilling off our shores accounts for just 7% of the 20 million barrels of oil consumed in the US every day. All 35,000 offshore wells combined only provide the annual equivalent of 26 days worth of oil.

The electric car would be a lot farther along if it weren't for.... well, just watched "Who Killed The Electric Car"

And it would help if people like Sara Palin would stop spreading lies that we can drill our way into energy independence. We CONSUME TOO MUCH!!

Maybe those low number have something to do with the fact that we have drilling moratoriums that cover most of the areas off our coastline??

EIA - Petroleum Basic Data

A large percentage of our oil is produced domestically. To ignore additional potential domestic resources is incredibly short sighted, especially considering world oil reserves are shrinking. We will drill for all of this oil at some point - that you can be assured. Desperation over waning resources will ultimately force the issue.
