Did I misunderstand the story featured in the Walton Sun? I thought I read that a witness stated that the driver had passed a vehicle, and when re-entering the lane, he went off the right hand side of the pavement, tried to pull back onto the road (and due to the drop-off), overcorrected, and went into the oncoming lane of traffic, running head on into another vehicle. Is this not what you guys read? To me, it didn't sound like Jesus, the driver, was trying to pass when he hit the vehicle. :dunno:

KD, I can understand the panic attacks. My gosh, to see something like that and know that you tried to prevent it. It's just crazy. The beach will give you the time you need to recup. I'll pray for you all the way there. Maybe you could leave extra early and be on 30-A before the crowds. If it's before check in, just go hang out at Grayton for a while!

I think that only the real Jesus knows what happened that day! All I know is I am going to try to be less careless when driving. (However, if he hadn't passed he wouldn't have gone off onto the shoulder. )

Thanks for the story, Kathy. That is really so unbelievable and needs to be told on Oprah or 60 minutes or something. You should contact someone with it.

I know I have made one change due to this incident on 331, I will no longer pass anyone on a two lane road who is going the speed limit. How stupid we (me) are for doing that! Where are we going that is worth risking our lives and the lives of others for? I hope all my children, family and friends also slow down and realize how dangerous cars are. Much scarier than alligators or snakes!

I want to apologize for highjacking this thread.

The local news stations did a story on this accident, however, I don't think anything much became of it. I am going to carry on in my quest to get this story out on a broader level.

Steele Mama, I too have made many changes in my driving habits. No longer will I get frustrated when I am behind a car go the speed limit. I have been so much more aware these last few days'. Perhaps, this is the good that comes out of something bad. I am a firm believer in this.

Thank you all for your concern, I will keep you posted on the outcome of this.

Kathy, you didn't hijack this thread--what you wrote needed to be written, and I'm glad you gave us the opportunity to read it. I think we're all so used to driving that we sometimes forget that in the wrong hands, cars can be deadly weapons. We all need to be aware and alert every time we get behind the wheel because you never know what irresponsible people we might be sharing the road with. Some people don't know, don't care, and don't think about the repercussions of their bad driving, as your story illustrates! I hope we don't read about any more vehicular tragedies. It's all so heartbreaking.

there's been so many accidents on the 331 bridge (remember the one last year where the northbound lane was closed and i got to discover the wonders of the mid-bay bridge?), i haven't been that way dragging the boat in quite a while - just too hard to stop that weight quickly

Kathy, I am so sorry you had to witness that. I can understand why you would have nightmares and anxiety over this. Life truly is fragile. Maybe this incident will make an impact on your son and he will never drink and drive. This is one of my greatest fears with my son. Funn is good, too much funn can impair good judgment, such as getting behind the wheel. A student here at MSU was leaving a frat party entirely too drunk to drive, the fraternity has designated drivers, but he grabbed his keys and made a dash for it. On his way home he hit and killed a woman walking on the side of the road. Well, what can you say? Not a bad kid, bad choice, but nevertheless, one person is dead, and he will probably spend the next 20 years in jail. We always think, it won't happen to me.

Kathy...this whole story is an outrage! I hope, hope, hope you continue to get this story out! I am almost too speechless for words! I can not even imagine how those of you who witnessed this must feel. When ever someone witnesses a tradgey it can be highly traumatic! Sometimes you even need counceling...hopefully talking about it on here will help provide that to you!

I travel 81 through Bruce to get to I 10 on my way to SoWal and home. I never try to pass any one (unless it is totally safe)! I think about my life, but also the lives of anyone that is on the road...I don't want to endanger any one...also, if someone passes me, I always slow down so as not to endanger them. If they want to go around me that badly...them by god ...let them go!

Exactly right, SJ...but he still passed, and it was probably not a safe thing to do at that time of the day...when he had been drinking. :dunno:

oh kathy - what a horrible thing to see, my heart goes out to you and the poor lady injured. things like this are one reason i hate to drive. i also have anxiety attacks before we leave on vacation, and i can't stand to sleep on the drive any more - i have to have my eyes peeled for "stuff" at all times. it's sad hat certain people cannot be responsible. i have no sympathy for a person who injures someone while driving drunk - that is an accident that is 100 % preventable. i can honestly say i have never, ever been behind the wheel when i have even had a sip of alcohol. i do my drinking at home.
