TP, I'm sure you were just as outraged by the GOP party campaigns using the flag in the past or Bush autographing a U.S. Flag....or are you just a partisan hater....????

Nope not a partisan hater, just showing that both parties have used "disrespectful" images of the flag. Interestingly that you only focused on the POTUS in the current election and never mentioned Mitt since you don't think anyone "seeking power should alter the United States Flag"....

I'm sure that you weren't aware that he has worn altered U.S. Flag pins while campaigning or you would have mentioned your thoughts of his disrespect.....

Hogs are sucking eggs.... Tide should win it all unless they beat themselves.

Now back to the OP.

Obama had a design on his website that looked similar to the U S Flag. Romney actually wore a lapel pin multiple times while campaigning that WAS a US Flag with an elephant picture defacing it. So you don't think that is similar or perhaps even greater disrespect?

Does any of this matter? I'm sure O and R and all the presidential candidates before them love this country, or they wouldn't put themselves through this type of scrutiny to become elected. The O modified flag is actually a print from "Artists for Obama." Think of all the artistic renderings of the flag -- Jasper Johns, etc. I wear a Ralph Lauren tank top with a modified flag on it every 4th of July and make a modified flag cake with blueberry stars and strawberry stripes, and line my driveway with modified metal flags -- all to show my love of country. Peace!

Yes, to many including me, it does matter. The use of the flag as a symbol for clothing worn on the 4th of July is one thing. I see that as a complement to its being. To use a modification of it for political use, regardless of political affiliation, or as a symbol of disrespect for our nation is a slap in the face of every veteran who has fought for it and those who have died for it. Yes, it is merely to many, a piece of cloth with symbolic markings on it. To others, it is the symbol of our freedoms and rights as Americans. I realize to some who visit and post here this will sound maudlin but it is not meant to be so. It is how one person who has served their country feels about the symbol we so proudly call our "Stars and Stripes". I fly it every day.

Amen Andy! The "does it really matter" attitude of many people is what is driving this country in the wrong direction. I will always display nothing but the real American flag on my property!

God Bless America.

There are many thousands of examples of artistic and creative stars and stripes, from beach towels to bed sheets to head bands to paintings to bath robes to car tags, business logos, kids art on brown paper sacks to bikinis. In my view, they all express freedom, pride and love of country. I can't imagine being offended by various, respectful expressions of our beloved red white & blue. Regardless of party affiliation. We have seen many versions of the US flag for campaign art but I haven't heard of this being a problem until reading this thread. Campaign issues are important and should be discussed and debated among citizens. Is the use of flag elements in campaign art an issue? Or in any kind of art? I did not realize that it was considered taboo but apparently it is a perceived problem for some.
Kind of interesting.

Unfortunately, some people just want to make an issue out of anything. Like you said, the American flag has been used in campaign art for centuries. Some people need to learn how to stop whining.
