Unfortunately, some people just want to make an issue out of anything. Like you said, the American flag has been used in campaign art for centuries. Some people need to learn how to stop whining.
And some people need to learn when to open their mouth and when to keep it shut! What you want to call "whining", I call patriotism but it is possible you don't understand what that is.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I think there are far more important issues to be worried about than someone respectfully referencing our iconic flag as part of their political campaign.

People are actually burning and defacing our flag while they try to hurt our country and attack our embassies. Now that is something to get upset about!

My sentiments exactly! Does anyone really believe that BO or MR are going to solve your problems or mine? Please do not hold your breath. We have a divided congress whose primary purpose seems to be dividing the nation in order to advance narrow minded political and economic idealogies. Extreme partisanship and compromise are enemies. Neither party has all the answers and neither party has more patriotism than the other. What we really need is less polarization and more rationalization. Everyone has a right to express themselves however none of us are immune to poor judgement and society must balance tolerance, fairness and discipline. As Americans we have a duty to our family, belief system and country but if we ignore our duty to this planet it will have very destructive effects. The people on this planet have more in common than politics and religion allow us to fully understand.

Both of the opinions above are right and I apologize for being so intense regarding our flag. The fact that some of the attitudes expressed regarding it, however, are excellent indications of where this nation is now and where it is going, IMO. You are right that nothing will be accomplished by devisivness. But so far, I see no intention on either side to belie their positions. There is a great divide in this country right now, like none I have ever seen in my lifetime. This election will determine what our nation will become, once more, more so than I have ever seen in my lifetime. I hope everyone will be happy with the choice that is made on Nov. 6th.

What I believe is of primary importance in this election is for record numbers of people to vote. The number of people educating themselves as best they can to the issues and voting is what is going to change our country and probably not a particular idealogy or person. However I must also admit to a fantasy about an unyielding Statesman for our leadership and unfortunately we have only two choices...

Andy with due respect, I don't call it patriotism when the GOP pundits have attacked the Obama flag symbol as disrespectful and anti-American, yet turn their face when their own candidate(s) have worn flags that have been marked with their parties symbols. I call that hypocrisy.

The GOP is no stranger to the utilizing and defacing the US Flag during campaigns and quite frankly what they currently are doing and previously have done is far worse than the Obama art.

Is the Obama art worse than, Lincoln's campaign flag? How about GOP VP Candidate Palin autographing a flag? Perhaps it's worse that President Bush's autographing a flag? I'm sure its worse than the Tea Party Flag....Probably worse than the VFW changes in the US Flag....and definitely worse than military soldiers autographing a US Flag..

Point being to the OP this isn't a partisan issue even though the GOP faithful would like it to be....

How do we feel about those U.S. Olympic athletes wrapping themselves in the flag after winning a medal? Is that patriotic or disrespectful to the flag?

Amen Andy! The "does it really matter" attitude of many people is what is driving this country in the wrong direction. I will always display nothing but the real American flag on my property!

God Bless America.

I think you took my message out of context. My point was, intentions are what matter, and different people have different ways of expressing their patriotism. One cannot know what is in a person's heart by what type of American flag ("real" or "modified") they display. I feel confident that O and R are both patriotic and love and respect this country. Andy A, I understand your intensity re: this issue and appreciate your service. My Dad served 27 years and was injured in Vietnam, so I understand the significance and sacrifice.
