i love watching those little hummers.

p.s. lady d there's a tornado warning in knoxville right now, they're advising everyone to go to neyland stadium where there is no chance of a touchdown.:D:wave:

 :D You are so bad! I take it you are tired of Tennessee also. Miss Kitty is right, I am going to train my hummer friends to come find you and beat you with their wings. They might even give you a little extra present you won't be wanting.

SJ, a tap wouldn't work, you know as well as the rest of us that bee hives are a honey comb and therefore a tap won't work except for the cell or cells that you hit.

LadyD, is the ceiling of your porch a sky blue? Lots of southern porches are to prevent wasps, bees, and birds from trying to nest in/on them. They assume it's sky and won't try to go for it. Based on your story sky blue might not be the way to go. Regardless keep helping the hummingbirds, if bees die out they are one of our last resorts.:love:

My porch in Asheville had a light blue ceiling, and the yellow jackets decided to build their hive behind the white siding, instead of the porch ceiling.

Bees are thriving here. I walked by my salvia (or Sylvia, for some:D) and it was buzzing! They were workin' it. Hundreds of 'em. I think you can see at least one in this pic.

I can send you about 200 more if you want them. Or it may be more. I have a entire swarm. I am not putting out anymore food for the bees tomorrow. The food source did keep many bees off the feeders but it also brought more bees to our yard. So we are not putting anything else out for them to sip on away from our feeders. Because it does not do any good. Bees are still straying away from their food source and covering up every feeder I have out front. And there are 6. The people next door have a deck full of colorful flowers, impatiens, mums, etc. in hanging baskets. And there is another home around the corner that has an even bigger deck full of roses, all types of hanging baskets with flowers, etc. So maybe they will go there. And various other places around that have baskets of impatiens and mums sitting outside. But not feeding them may also make them triple up on our feeders. They are already anywhere from 6 to 7 bees deep on each port. I have not seen but one bird on the feeder today and that has not been much. Any that have flown up have flown around looking at all the bees and left. It does not matter where I move the feeders, the bees find them and cover them up. Just had to vent! :bang:

The beekeepers I spoke to a couple of years ago told me that there is a product called "Bee Be Gone." (Not kidding.) You could look into it. The downside is that it smells like rancid meat...:dunno:

I feel like a guilty mom, like I'm going to be neglecting them. Sure feeding them away from the feeders might sometimes keep them off the feeders but when you do that they tell all their friends.

They showed up out of the blue Tuesday and were causing problems for the birds on the feeders then. This was before I started putting stuff out for them. I did not do that until probably Thursday. The queen needs to take them and move along. It is literally a wonder they did not sting either one of us.

They have gotten their last meal from me today. I think there is obviously a hive somewhere nearby. I do not believe it is in our yard though. They somehow just ended up here in our yard and found the feeders. I hate that as I probably will have problems with them next year. I sure hope not.
