Looking for a protein drink for breakfast that's not high in calories. I've spent a lot of time googling. Most of them recommend using protein powder. But I've read that many of these powders contain high amounts of heavy metals and other unhealthy ingredients.

I thought about making up my own recipe as an experiment. 1 cup of Greek yogurt (160 calories and 22 grams protein), 1/3 cup skim milk (30 calories), and frozen berries. :dunno:

Suggestions would be appreciated.

Avoid the powders and mixes. Friends have had bad side effects from them.

My first question is why are you using protein shakes at all? Unless you're trying to gain weight (which it seems you're not since you mention "low calorie") there's really no place for liquid food in a normal diet. We always suggest to our clients that they default to whole food and their performance and appearance results are amazing.

If speed is an issue there are lots of whole food breakfast options. Most of them have to do with prepping food ahead of time. A great, fast morning meal is a sausage and egg scramble made the night before and 'waved in the morning. Add a few chunks of melon or some berries or, better yet, some veggies on the side and it's breakfast. Takes less time than a shake and it's real food.

And why "low calorie"? If it's body composition changes you want going low cal may be working against you.

Joy Bauer on Today and others talk on TV about having protein in the morning to help your metabolism and lose weight. Joy was supposed to post a breakfast protein drink on the Today Show website, but I can't find it. I have GERD so am not supposed to eat greasy food like sausage, and I have high cholesterol so my doc told me to only have eggs once a week. Cheerios and fruit gets boring, but that's what I normally eat.

Thanks for your advice. I appreciate it.

I use a whey protein isolate powder made by Biotics, with 1 cup of almond milk and frozen strawberries. It works out to about 150 calories, is good and keeps me going until lunch.

They have a protein powder there they put in their smoothies. Put in a bit with frozen fruit and whatever liquid you want then blend.

Joy Bauer on Today and others talk on TV about having protein in the morning to help your metabolism and lose weight.

Your eating priorities are:
  • quality
  • proportions
  • timing
Until you're eating clean (meat and veggies, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar - no grains, beans or dairy), work out appropriate proportions of macro nutrients (protein, carbs and fat) for your activity level, timing is a non-issue. Don't worry about when you eat until you're eating excellent whole food in the right amounts.

I have GERD so am not supposed to eat greasy food like sausage,

The idea is to get some protein and fat for breakfast. If sausage doesn't work, eat chicken, a pork chop, some steak, half a hamburger, something like that.

and I have high cholesterol so my doc told me to only have eggs once a week.

Don't get me started. Your doctor's been led astray. Read this.

And your gerd is not caused by greasy food. It's caused by...

Cheerios and fruit gets boring, but that's what I normally eat.

...your current breakfast. Grains are a huge inflammatory stimulus. Cut those out, I guarantee your gerd goes away.

None of this is medical advice. I'm suggesting you substitute some different whole foods for what you're now eating. Not supplements, not drugs, not manufactured food-like products. It's just food.

Better yet, For The Health Of It carries some excellent quality grass-fed, pastured and free-range meats and poultry, eggs and local organic produce. Good stuff, and Ed and Rachel are awesome people.
