My middle name is cheese. I adore cheese. Everyone knows that about me. My husband's sisters in Wisconsin always send me cheese for Christmas. During my three pregnancies, all I craved was cheese. We went to Italy during my only successful pregnancy, and all I wanted to eat there was cheese sandwiches. When I went into labor at 26 weeks and was hospitalized in Atlanta for two months, my husband would drive every day to pick up havarti cheese sandwiches from Pharr Road Wine and Cheese Shop in Buckhead.

So I have spent much time trying to duplicate the cheese dip from Mexican restaurants. Mine always turns out stringy. Dunno why.

As far as Chinese food goes, we can get two eggrolls, a main course big enough for two, and rice for $8.41 at our local Chinese restaurant. There's no way I could prepare it for that price.

Cheese to ya!

sorry - so cheesy, eh!?

That price is cheap and you won't find it around here for anywhere close to that price, much less anywhere around here. Count on at least a 45 min round trip drive to find Chinese food.

I find Mexican food difficult to prepare, and we have some great cooks at my house. My salsa and pico are great, and I just can't make a smooth cheese dip (but then Gordo's is easy and good). Of course, tacos are easy, as well as fajitas. I guess what's hard about it is all of the different ingredients and food prep time.

And knowing that for all of the time and money that you put into prep, it's cheaper if you just go to a Mexican restaurant. Kinda like Chinese food.
I too find Mexican food harder to cook than most would think. The key is fresh cilantro, spices, etc. and canned chilis and enchilada sauce from Hatch, NM, the chili capital of the world. My sister lives in NM and sends me big boxes to replenish my supply. Nothing from the grocery store compares. Unfortunately, I have to settle for packaged tortillas. Also, chihuahua cheese is very good.

I have a brother in Albuquerque, and he helps me out, too. Before we got married, my husband made the best homemade tortillas--then he got lazy.

If you are ever near Port St Joe, Pepper's is good. I don't much care for cheese dip (which is weird, because I like cheese), but supposedly Pepper's is addictive. The fish tacos at Killer Seafood in Mexico Beach are pretty good, too.

I do not find Mexican food tremendously difficult to prepare, but I do love going out for it. Sometimes I just don't want to eat my own cooking.

IMO, the only reason to eat Mexican food in a restaurant is that they have the best chips.

There is a group of us in sowal who are Coco junkies. You know who you are!

Fresh hot chips, salsa, cheese dip and a BF margarita to start. Then dinner, even though we're already full!

The best thing about Coco's is the great staff and family friendly atmosphere. Plus, we really like the food! Little Spidey likes to go to "the restaurant with the chips and cheese dip" (of course, his favorite place is still Royal Orchid for Pad Thai).

Mexican at home is really good too though. And not difficult unless you decide to make those incredible chile rellenos (I've only had the nerve to do this once myself - yummy - but really time consuming). We usually make about 25 tacos with cheese, with lots of chopped lettuce and tomato, mexican rice (out of the package), and refried beans (out of the can) with cheese on top. And you can't beat a fresh tomato salsa (not too crazy about anything you buy at the store). I don't do cheese dip at home - could never figure this one out.

Shall we start a salsa thread???
