reading all of these threads about prepared thanksgiving dinners makes me wonder what happened to having a traditional thanksgiving and cooking your own meals? i thought that was the true beauty of thanksgiving, everyone in the kitchen cooking or in the way and the turkey bowl. i would die if i went home and there wasn't a turkey or a sweet potato casserole in the oven, and no dirty dishes to clean. everyone is just so busy these days.

I think most of the info about takeout T-giving is for people vacationing here over Thanksgiving break. Not all rentals are equipped to cook a full T-giving dinner.

Nope, and there's nothing like a 9am phone call on T-Day with someone complaining because the unit doesn't have enough pie plates, a turkey baster, or (and I don't know why this isn't a standard in every rental ) a cornocopia (sp?).

The real nightmare is after the renters leave and they have cooked. :yikes:

I go all out cooking for the holidays even though it's just me and the 2 dogs. The good news is, I get to try all those recipes for left over turkey for a month afterwards. The dogs are much more interested in the food and their new Christmas toys than holiday spirit. I still have to read their Christmas card to them and I still can't figure out how they mail me a card. Family and friends are what makes the holidays special, but we get great joy vicariously thru others excitement and hope to read all about it in the lounge.

Don't despair aggieb - the Scooterbug family will spend days cooking everything from scratch (except the cranberry sauce and the Cool-Whip) for a 3 generation formal meal.

I don't cook well so I am kitchen wench - polishing silver, washing and chopping veggies, setting the table, hauling firewood, bartending for the chef, and of course dishes!

Even when we are at the beach for Thanksgiving, I cook a huge meal. I cook the stuff that freezes well the weekend before. On Tuesday I make the desserts. And I do the rest on Thanksgiving Day. We only have one oven at the beach house, so I also use the oven at my sister's house which is a few hundred yards away.

I made those lemon-garlic green beans last year and they were excellent! I had to ask BR what elephant garlic was.

LOL. We love those beans. Glad you do, too!

The reason we have the redundant beans is that the guys in the family don't like the bean casserole (because of the sour cream and cheese), but beans are their favorite vegetable. The girls love the bean casserole (cheese is my middle name). Nobody is wild about squash. So we just cook two bean side dishes.

Green Bean Casserole

Mother made this dish every Christmas and Thanksgiving for years. She got the recipe from her next-door neighbor and friend.. We like this so much that we always double it. When we're having leftovers, it's my first choice.

3 tablespoons butter, melted
2 tablespoons flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon sugar
1/2 can French-fried onion
1 cup sour cream
2 (12 ounce) packages of frozen French-style green beans, cooked
1/2 pound grated Cheddar cheese
1/2 cup corn flake crumbs

Combine 2 tablespoons of butter with the flour; cook gently. Remove from heat; stir in seasonings and cream. Fold in beans. Place in a shallow 2-quart casserole dish. Cover with cheese. Melt remaining butter with corn flake crumbs in a small saucepan. Put crumbs and onion rings on top. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Serves 8.

If we were going to be with the extended family we would be cooking the traditional meal but no way am I cooking all that food for 2 people. This year my Mother, brothers etc. will be going to the Mts.

Hubbie and I will be the only ones at home, so we will probably dine out or have carry out.
