I really miss the Web cam that we used to have on this Board. 'Twas a relaxing and pleasant way to start my work day. Kurt, any chance of that happening again?

Did Kurt's old webcam just upload a jpg image every few seconds to a server, or was it streaming? My old webcam did the former (and had the software to let you specify an ftp address to upload to) and also did AVI's, but now I can't find a webcam that has this software. I used to set up my webcam and send the images to my website. The folks at the computer stores tell me that now people only use webcams in chat rooms and with public IM software, and that these services have webcam connectivity built into them, so no such software comes with the webcams anymore.

Actually what I'd really like to do is streaming audio/video so that if the bird flu comes around, I can teach my classes from home and not risk exposure. (At my suggestion, our administration is coming up with a plan to enable us to do such a thing so that classes can continue in the case of an emergency that prevents faculty and students from being on campus). My IT guy says that I should get a capture card and use Windows Media Encoder to push to a server running Windows Media Services. He said he'd demo it to me one day.

I'm totally clueless about all of this now. I guess I should research this on the Internet (not my area of expertise, and I'm too busy getting ready for the G?del, Escher, Bach course I'm teaching). I just haven't got a round tuit. :D

From you experts out there, any suggestions?

Wow, BR...you are on your way to becoming the virtual professor! I kinda like that idea, bird flu or none. Maybe I can mount a Web cam and broadcast to all my winery clients. Would be like the Wine Wizard of Oz.

The Web view I am referring to was a still shot that was updated throughout the day. I think it changed every hour or less. The camera was mounted on the house that sold in an auction, just east of The Red Bar. Kurt took the camera down right before Ivan (I think that was the culprit.). I sure do miss it, though, especially on those days when I'm stuck in the office with a bunch of
w(h)iners coming at me!

Think maybe we should all send daddy-o a donation to have it re-installed?

Last year, we volunteered Conch Out as a spot for the "eye in the sky." Camera could look right down the main beach access at Grayton, including the flags. Kurt, offer still holds.

much too far from Grayton
Yes, count me in also for a donation! I absolutely  loved  the webcam! One summer I could not make a trip to Grayton and was so heartbroken, but the beach cam helped me through...
